We have my desk top in back bedroom and daughter has laptop (which I am on at the moment) I used desktop on Thursday evening it was ok have just opened it up now and cannot get internet access - (we have a Linksys wireless router and speed booster) laptop has connected ok but the light on the booster is out and don`t have any connection at all from the desktop - I`ve reset the router at the button and also reset the cable just in case. Not really sure what else to do - please can anyone help? think its something to do with connection between desk top and router but not got a clue...am getting a bit stressed at computer give me enough grief when its actually working!!!
Thanks .. I`m hoping I only have to press a button to sort it out, but something tells me it could be more.
Also am baffled as to why the laptop will work??

Whats a 'speed booster'??
Can you disconenct the booster and just go through the router instead?
Is the desktop wireless or ethernet?:idea:0 -
not sure i've seen any isp's supply a linksys router, if u have reset router it will have lost any connection settings (or did u just mean power off and on again?) so maybe daughters laptop is connecting thru neighbors link?
for more help
list your internet provider and see if you can "log on" to the router.
list your operating systemclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
We are with Virgin broadband, router has been set up for 12+ months, I pressed the little reset button on the router box!! should I not have done this?
Can`t get into router the little symbol at corner of screen says disabled when I run the mouse over it.
Speed booster is little box that boosts signal, it plugs into usb I think never really asked as it was all set up for me ages ago.
Desk top is plugged in if thats what ethernet means.
Thanks0 -
Does the desktop run Vista or XP? I have had a similar problem with our Vista laptop today. After 3 hours of trying every networking trick I could find, I found that Vista had installed an update yesterday. I did a System Restore to before the update, reconnected to the network, and now all is ok again!0

Desktop is XP and laptop which I am on now is Vista. I`m just baffled as to how it seems to have disabled itself on desktop in 24 hours and yet the laptop will work! I must be missing something quite obvious...0

Put this ~
http://192.168.1.1/
into the laptop browser address bar at the top (where the http://forums...... are)
If it cant connect, then its looking like the laptop is connected to another router
if it DOES connect, then ~
Enter the login and password for your router. The default login is blank and the password is "admin" (yes, not the other way around).
We can take from there (if it connects of course):idea:0 -

It means your using your own router, so id say thats good news yes
Im afraid im a little busy right now (Fixing someone elses computer)
But in the settings you need to find the 'SSID' (Which is the NAME the router is given to transmit via wireless)
And look under the security section to find the WEP key (Which is needed for both computers to connect but OTHER computers in the vicinity cannot)
Go back to your desktop computer and search for the SSID of the router and try to connect to it
(Sorry if I miss anything, im kinda rushing here):idea:0 -
The router is a WRT54GS if thats any help0
