i got rid of my 'Norton' in favour of Grisoft and never looked back, also worth using is microsoft's own 'WINDOWS ANTI SPYWARE (BETA)'. This is free to download on a 6 month trial basis, like grisoft it had an excellent review, just go to the microsoft sight, click on the download,(as above)you then register your copy of windows (must be 2000 or above) and away you go
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow
  • Hi. Iam just downloading the avast av software after reading this thread. I currently have broadband which is recieved via a router with a built in firewall and NAT. Is a software firewall reccomended as the manual tries to dissuade you from using one?

    Cheers!

hi ginger if you decide to use avg then you must remove nav first. use the removal tool intel gave you. if you cant remove nav this way (i had all sorts of trouble getting it removed) then you might have to ask someone else to put it in there comp first then transfer it across to yours, then remove it that way. with mine nav was stopping me downloading everything so could not get rid of nav witch in turn was stopping me accessing any of my secure sites. as for avg go for it nothing to loose. hope this all makes sence. good luck.

I'd always recommend people to use a software firewall. Reasons being:

    - It monitors incoming and outgoing traffic. A hardware firewall can realistically only block incoming traffic (setting it up for outgoing would be a hassle). For example, you get a piece of spyware on your machine and it tries communicating back home with any personal details, a software firewall would alert you to this outbound attempt.

    - It's application specific. A hardware firewall will just block a port and not pay attention to the application trying to use the port. A software firewall can be configured per application.

    - It's a good second line of defence. With a hardware firewall and software firewall you'll be nice and secure.

    Good firewalls are:
    Kerio Personal Firewall
    Sygate Firewall
    Zone Alarm

All the above are free, I personally use Kerio as it's light on resources.

  • Thanks for that mate. Problem is that all of those sites don;t seem to offer a free version. Infact sygate has been bought out by Norton and only offer Norton's version. Is there a free one that's any good or should I stick with Microsoft?
I've been looking at Spyware also, I've come up with Microsoft and spybot with free antispyware. Any recommendations?

    Cheers.
