Amusing letter from desperate letting agent

Options
Hi

My letting agents have written to me today telling (not asking) me that they are going to put a "let by" sign outside my house. Fine you might think... but they let the house to me over 4 years ago :rotfl:  :rotfl:  :rotfl:

They must be really desperate for business.

On a serious note, can I refuse? Whilst it wouldn't really cause me any great hardship, I'd rather not have a tacky sign outside my house

Any thoughts?

Refuse if you want. "Quiet enjoyment" doesn't include signs in the front garden.

As I landlord, I'd be furious about this. Bet they haven't told the landlord...

    Very true.

Some letting agents don't actually manage properties or do very much after they have introduced the tenants.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Why? I'm just interested. I can see why a tenant wouldn't want it (because I don't!), but I don't really see why a landlord would care much.

mm interesting... depends very much on whether they have treated you well enough to consider doing them a favour with no benefit to yourself...

one thought that crossed my mind, if they try to insist and you're not keen, is to check your tenancy agreement; I don't know how common it is but I believe mine has a clause about not displaying any signs or items in your windows (basically to stop large flags/beer trophies etc I guess?).

If you have this clause, you could argue that the LA is being hypocritical in asking that they can display a sign when you're not allowed to...

Like I say, just a thought!

They do "manage" the property, so it's not like I've had no contact with them for four years. However I use the term "manage" very, very loosely indeed.

Interesting point :T I've just check and it says I must not display signs or notices from the property. It also says I must allow them to put up notices on the property to say it is for sale or re-letting. But a "let by" sign is neither of those :D

Either you don't know you're moving or they want to put up a fly board up, which breaches bye laws.

If you are a model citizen, then you will say bog off. If however you're a business minded opportunistic individual, then you don't need me to tell you what conversation you should have with the agent!!!

I think they have a cheek. I am a landlord and whilst I do have to let boards outside my houses I don't like them because they can potentially attract unwanted attention from undesirables especiallly squatters, burglars etc moreso if the property is empty.

I would politely decline by letter and you can use that as a reason if you so wish and also that you don't want to have to fend off anyone potentially knocking on your door to enquire about it.

edit: sorry I realise you said let by not to let so sorry about that

I know it's an offence to advertise a property for sale that really isn't and would also assume it to be the same for rental properties. Also, is your agent a member of any bodies like Arla. If they are, I am pretty sure it would unacceptable to advertise a property to let that isn't edit or even one let by that isn't!.

In short though, I would politely decline in writing, you don't need to give reasons, just no thank you - end of.

If they put a board up, you can always pull it out again, write to them again and ask them to come and collect it.

The board is "let by" not "to let".
