Sneaky DFS

Hi,

not sure if anyone else has experienced this but a couple of weeks ago I bought a sofa from them and the total came to £887. I chose the one year defer and payments at 0% over 2 years option.

Today i received the financing information saying that the loan amount was £887 but that I would pay a total of £997.88 which inlcuded payment insurance.

Now i NEVER sign up for payment protection insurance.

I called the branch and spoke to the manager (who also sold me the sofa). He asked me if i remember reading a laminated card he gave me. I said I remember the card but was a bit vague about the details.

Apparently the card said an OPTIONAL insurance payment would be included unless I said otherwise - though i do not remember this. He asked me if i had read the card and understood it though.

I then pointed out how the main section of the invoice said nothing about it and then he asked me to look carefully at the top right corner where a box was ticked.

I feel as though i have been hoodwinked!!! I said at no point did you say did i want insurance. he said, at no point did i say i did NOT want insurance!!

Anyway, he said come back into the store and do another finance agreement. I just wanted to warn others. When i go back, i am going to ask to look at that card again.

bye

Hi OP, I would speak to DFS, as I encountered the same thing on a leather suite earlier this year. We chose the same option as you, not that we couldn't afford the suite, when we got it, but that we'd rather have the cash in our savings account earing interest for another year!

That total price is the price you'd pay if you wanted to take the finance option, but you can settle at the ORIGINAL price. It's confusing I know (I almost blew my top at the time), but you can just pay the full amount (without additional finance charges) without hasstle.

    Hope that helps.

I posted previously about DFS. I never ever take out additional insurance and it wasn't until I got completely bored with paying £46pm and I decided to get a settlement figure that I realised that I was paying PPI - at least I "saved" the PPI by paying it off early. I was really angry at the time...I really felt conned. It was definitely never mentioned and the figures all just mention the original price but the PPI is calculated in with the monthly repayments. I then went on to sign the credit agreement without noticing the PPI - Was very  with myself!

  • We had a similar situation on Saturday when we sorted out our purchase. We are both savvy to PPI and would never take it, so when the assistant mentioned the monthly rate if we didn't pay in full after the year it turned out to be £11 more per month. We questioned her and that's when it came to light.

We told her to change it as we didn't want the PPI.

She did read out the lamnated card which we ignored and at no time mentioned that we would have to confirm that we didn't want it.

Guess what whilst writing this post thought I'd check the contract on a sideboard we ordered the week before on the same type of deal. No payment first year and 6 interest free monthly payments with Payment Protection added of an additional £12.50 per month although it won't apply as we are paying off full amount the salesman never mentioned anything to do with payment protection.

Although it is there on the form and ticked by the salesman.

What can I say not so savvy after all!!

Just going to make a call.

  • I can't believe this is still happening. Exactly the same thing happened to us in 2000. We actually stated that we didn't want PPI but it was still added. It was only when I got home I noticed the figures were incorrect. My wife works in a bank and told me we would not be able to cancel the agreement because it was a non-cancellable agreement. I went straight back to the store and after a little argument they cancelled and drew up another.

We wrote to the chief executive about this and were visited at home by another board member who said he was deeply concerned about this misselling as it could lead to them being stopped from selling any kind of insurance. We got our sofas within 2 weeks of ordering! Seems as though the message never got through.

There are strict codes of conduct governing the selling of insurance so my advice is to fire off letters to the managing director and chief executive claiming you were missold insurance. Also CAB, watchdog (BBC) and consumer assocaitions are interested in these kind of things.
    I don't believe it!

I think you should all complain to your Trading Standards department and contact local newspapers to give matter publicity.

  • I've also discovered today I've been done by the DFS payment protection scam- the box was ticked without me even being asked.

The worst thing about it is the "Toal amount to pay" box on the form does not include the payment protection payments, so you end up paying more than the total amount to pay. I've ended up £200 out of pocket.

    I'm disgusted.
  • You have to appreciate that DFS aren't there to sell suites. There main role is to sell credit and insurance! You have to go in there with the thought that they are out to con you otherwise they will!
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!
