The fun has started! RELENTLESS, What do i say?

Hi all, Well the fun has just begun for me! 1st of the month has been and gone and Northern Rock did not receive there colossal mortgage payment for the first time in nearly four years,, First plus secured loan got zilch as well and i feel somewhat pleased with myself. Is this wrong? Missing these first payments proved a very hard decision but now there is no turning back i feel i am really moving forward and can now focus on following through till the end. (renting, volo repo, and Bankruptcy)
Standby all you veterans of this board i am going to have so many questions!
As said the fun has just begun and the calls have started already with no relent, i have not yet answered or made contact. Should i ? I mean what do i say? I feel i want the next month or so to save for rental payments etc so i am looking for time on my side. Should i make contact with them sooner rather than later?

  • Hi SSC, and welcome! :hello:

We've just gone BR (well, OH has!) and we didn't talk to any of the creditors beforehand. We only missed one payment on each, though, as we went BR pretty quickly - just 4 weeks after making the decision. It's kind of up to you - if it's going to be months before you go BR then talking to them and maybe offering a token payment might keep them off your back a bit. But if it's only going to be a month or so, personally I wouldn't bother! If you can cope with the phone calls, that is!;) hth CBx:D
  • If you do end up speaking to them I would tell that that you are having financial difficulties and are seeking advice. Don't let them pressure you into making payments though as they will more than likely try and apply pressure to get you to do so. Be adamant that you cannot afford to pay and that you will be in touch once you have sought financial advice.

NR were a nightmare with me and i only had a loan with them although a big one. They called about 3 times a day just 3 days after missing my first payment since taking the loan 2 years previously.

  • NR & Picture for me....not spoken to Picture & they hav`nt called either!! Only just opened negotiations with NR who after 4 months have started legals....too late for me though.

I must say that NR have taken on board the more `gentle`/`helpful` approach & I have appreciated it.

I would suggest calling NR & say you need a breather....they may agree a few months payment holiday to allow you time to get your `head together`

  • Hi Sparesomechange,

I could have written your post as my husband and I are in the exact same position. Loans and credit cards of mine have been missed for the first time and the calls have started. We have just missed our second mortgage payment and are saving for a rent deposit so we can volutary repo and go bankrupt in the new year once we have the funds to do so.

So just want to say your not on your own xx

  • PS I think i'm losing the plot too. I've gone from being depressed, constantly worrying sleepless nights etc etc to feeling quite happy that we've decided what we plan to do is 100% the right thing and I feel somewhat pleased with the missed payments myself too. I know that is completely and utterly wrong but we are about to lose our beloved family home we have put sooooooooo much money into and I think it's a coping mechanism x

  • Hi Sparesomechange

As others have said It will probably be alright to talk to prime lenders etc in the early stages because most of them have reasonably well trained? staff but if it goes on a while.......Write and demand that they communicate with you only in writing.. it helps to keep the stress levels down.....especially if the debt is sold on to Debt collecting Agency.
You are probably better off NOT mentioning your intention to go BR at this stage
    Always send letters recorded delivery
Hope all goes well and good luck

    Hi Sparesomechange and Completemess,

As ChelseaBun (my OH) has mentioned my BR was on Monday and so far out of 6 unsecured creditors, I have only been chased by 2. Apart from letters from the rest asking me to set up new DDs, as I cancelled DDs to prevent payments from my overdraft (which is being included in my BR). I've managed to speak to 1 and give them my BR number. The other keeps ringing when I'm driving or in the bath, but I can't wait to tell them.:j

I, too was very nervous and felt guilty when I first stopped all the payments. But this soon became a feeling of empowerment. Taking charge of one's own finances, even if it was to decide to stop paying creditors, is a positive and empowering thing! Apart from the decision to go BR, it is the first step in taking control of my finances, and an end to sticking my head in the sand.:beer:OD

Trust me there is no point talking to anyone if your 100% going BR, it wont stop them pestering you, some of the less aggresive creditors may back of if you say your taking advice from CCCS or CAB, but i doubt the ones you mention will.

If you do speak to them, dont get drawn in by anything they say, just repeat your seeking advice and will only deal in writing from now on, it wont stop them ringing, but they hate it when you do that:D If they start waffleing on just hang up, dont let them stress you out;)
Thats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all …………. :(
