She's had 1 upper right molar tooth out & a scale & polish! (And injections/pills etc) but she's better than I thought she'd be & scratching the window non stop to go out! She'll be overjoyed @ 6 when I let her, she'll probably go sleep in the park all night now to tell me off!

I am soo angry, I don't know where to start . Sorry in advance if this is a bit long and garbled.

We live in a very rural area - a small collection of houses and farms (approx 12), not enough to even be classed as a village. Our cottage is in the middle of fields and is approx ¼ mile from the nearest road (fairly quiet country lane).

Following the death of our last, much loved, moggy I decided to fulfil a longheld wish to own a Siamese. We did all our research (the type we wanted was the Classic/Traditional) and, eventually, bought from a breeder who also had kennels. We have quite a few dogs and felt that kittens reared around dogs would be better able to cope with all the noise and bustle of a multi dog household. We chose two half brothers - both quite different characters - and have never regretted our decision to buy Siamese.

Our boys are now just over 2½ years old. Because of where we live, we have always allowed them to be outdoor cats - play in the fields surrrounding us. They always came home for their meal. Cat A was always very adventurous and his "patch" got bigger & bigger. Then he started to go missing. We asked down at the nearest farm if they had seen a Siamese, but No. He would always turn up after a few days, stay for a day or two, then disappear again.

A couple of months ago I received a phone call from a woman who lives approx 3 fields away, asking if I owned a Siamese. When I said "Yes, we have two." she was not happy. She said she had spent 14 months trying to tame him . I asked her why on earth would she think he was a stray and she told me some story about "a large number of cats" being dumped near their farm. Yeah! Right! pick the expensive looking pedigree why don't you. (Edit: I actually phoned the local vets and they knew nothing about so-called dumped cats) I politely requested that she stopped feeding him, did not let him in her house, and shoo'd him away. She kept saying things like "Oh! he's so handsome" and "He's such a lovely cat". I repeated my request and that was that.

He was still going missing. I took to stopping at the farm on my way home and calling him - he was always down there - I would put him in car and drive him home. I spoke to her (phone) on a number of occasions, asking her not to feed him and explaining that we were besides ourselves with worry when he didn't come home, and that his brother was missing him and not eating so well without him there. Nothing changed.

The other day I drove down there and knocked on the door. Both she and her husband answered the door. Her face fell and she asked me in. She said she would go and fetch him as he was asleep on her bed. Her husband told me that he "liked his home comforts" and sat on the sofa with them at night then slept on their bed!! She came back with him upside down in her arms like a baby, kissing him, and wouldn't hand him over!!! I had to physically take him from her. To say I was livid would be an understatement! Then she tells me she has flea treated him!! I turned and got out of there before I said something I would regret.

I have been in touch with the Citizens Advice, Cats Protection League (for advice) and Siamese Cat Rescue (for advice). I have been advised to send her a solicitors letter or tell the police he has been stolen (if he goes again). However, because this is such a small community, I was thinking of writing a friendly but firm letter expaining that if this happened again I would be forced to take legal action. Can anyone advise me over the wording of such a letter, and the situation in general.

Sorry this is so long!! Many thanks

you could try what my sister did when a neighbour kept enticing her cat into their home ... she told them the cat was on special food + medication every day for a heart complaint and if she missed it it could be fatal ...
she had no probs after that ...
it might work for you ??

I'd go the legal route in your position and if that didnt work I might go further.

However I would NOT post about any actions I might be tempted to take (and I am not even a cat owner/person)

This persons action in my opinion is disgusting and if the police will not act, well sorry but I might.
  • I feel for you i really do ive been in this situation i also live rural and one of my neighbours took in all the cats and fed them. Luckly my cat wasnt interested as she is almost Autistic and hates change but I got a kitten and she enticed her straight away..i was livid i only feed my cats on a dry food as the vet told me it was best for them. She was feeding my cat cheap tinned food and letting them use her house as a litter tray.Needless to say i was very angry. But there wasnt anything i could do. Oneday my brother mentioned he wanted a cat and i offered him my kitten. I went to her house and asked for her back she denied having her. Then she came down the stairs yawning! I walked into her house took my cat and delivered her at my brothers. Now i get to see her all the time, she stays at home, and we are all happy. Do you know anyone you can give him too where you can still see him but is far enough away not to go back...or you could get a cat avariy outside.

Sometimes yes cats choose - we had one showed up at my mum's house one day and basically refused to leave - ever. We went through weeks of turning it away, refusing to feed it - and then his owners moved house... without him... so that was it, paws firmly under the table with us and he was obsessed with my step father. He was clearly genuinely abandoned though - after being frogmarched home to his real owners night after night (walking along the street with a cat under your arm makes you look like a right wally) - we saw the removal van go off without him and he'd firmly made the decision himself by then (as had his owner).

We've also lost a cat to an elderly lady who fed all the local menagerie. She repeatedly tried to return her to us - but cat food versus fresh chicken and tuna isn't a competition. She obviously doted on dear Ginger (albeit giving her a gender change) and we had a shared custody deal going on for quite some time before moggie decided to defect completely. I was very grateful though that when Ginger died (she had one heck of an innings - I swear ginger tabbys are indestructible) she did come round the house to let us know at least.

As for my furball - she's indoor only for health reasons (the lack of a leg being the reason) but I wouldn't generally keep a cat as an indoor only unless there were good reasons (main road, health problems etc). With the way she can play for attention - if she got out I'm sure she'd be adopted by a million people since she can do an Oscar callibre performance of the "poor crippled cat who just needs more attention, food and cuddles" which she breaks out everytime there's someone new around anyway who's likely to be gullible enough to fall for it. Thankfully, as well as her being microchipped, I've taught in enough local schools that most of the kids know who a three legged cat is likely to belong to.

There's a kids' story book I read quite a lot when I'm out with classes that I love which is about a scrounging cat who has six dinners a day - until he has a cough and ends up at the vet six times who susses what's going on and sticks him back to a one dinner a day diet which I think sums up some cats quite sweetly.

i think cats do choose too as i have a big black and white cat staying now who belonged down the road, i couldnt go past their house without him appearing from the garden and following me everywhere, for the paper, the bus etc then he started sleeping in an old shed in the garden and nothing would move him, i relented one winters night and let him in

on the other side of the coin one of mine went to live with a neighbour who always had the heating on they did all they could to dissuade him, the dh didnt even like cats but the cat won and he moved away with them when they flitted and follows the dh about like a dog and the dh is besotted to him now
  • I have a cat who has recentlly started wandering, he is very old and quite greedy. A neighbour has informed me today that she has been feeding him and allowing him to sleep in her house, he still comes home though so it isnt as if he wants to be her cat.

I have asked her very politely to stop feeding him and letting him in and she said that he loves her so she cant stop as it would be cruel, the thing with my cat is that he is so friendly that a child could grab him by the tail and he would purr and go back for more. If he had gone missing, like I can see some of yours have, I think it would be a little different but he comes home every day and sleeps in my house, he also had a collar untill a few days ago which has now been removed by someone. When I insisted she stop feeding him she just kept replying that he was so loving and so friendly, she seemed deaf to anything I had to say. I think that sometimes it is true that cats choose their owners but in this is a definate case of enticement as we have had him for 15 years and not until this lady moved in have we had any trouble!
  • hiya, I had exactly the same problem as you..I kept going round to my neighbours house to retrieve my cat as she had been missing for hours and we were worried sick! they did'nt get the message though:mad::mad: so I ended up posting a polite notice through their door, explaining how she was our cat and was missed greatly by the kids, it worked for a while and she seemed to be around a lot more after that, however, she is now dissappearing again for hours on end in the daytime..god only knows where she goes..and then shee arrives home again at tea time...suppose we've just got used to it now, you can never truly own your cat..she chooses who her owner is,and it might be more than one person!

ps your neighbour is weird and so is mine. lots of cats come into my garden, they sometimes nick a bit of food out of our moggys dish, and they get fussed if they want it..but I definately don;'t let them in the house because they don't live here.
