The neighbours' cat is being friendly to us. How friendly can we be to the cat without risking 'stealing' it? From reading this thread, it seems that petting the cat is OK, but letting it inside the actual house or feeding it are definite no-nos.

Do not feed him or let it him your house.
From what is posted in this thread, cats are fickle and he may decide that he wants to come and live with you which will lead to issues and possibly heartache for your neighbour which I am sure you don't want.
He can come and visit you in your garden and you can pet him. As long as he seems well cared for, don't take it any further than that.0
