I was considering that- but what should I say? Take your cat to the damn vet you negligent ****?

Argh. I'm going to take him to the vets anyway, he's uncomfortable with the itching and the huge 3 inch mats he has. And I'm going to take photos of him before he gets dematted for evidence.

Could you take him to your vets and ask the vet nurse to scan the cat and see if it is chipped? this should be free and would only cost you your time and may give you the info you need.

Yeah, I will. I just really don't understand why you'd feed a cat, see that its fur is completely matted in 3 inch clumps, only let it in for food then boot it out the door again...why have a cat? I don't get it! No wonder he's always in my house, and we don't even feed him. That says something.

Said cat is currently asleep on my pillow, upside down, legs in the air. Haven't got the heart to put him out. I'll have to treat everything for fleas, god it's itchy! I'll see what the vet says. I'm kind of hoping he doesn't have a chip, because I know there's no way his owners will ever get him dematted. If you saw the state of him, you'd know what I mean. Despite all that, he is the most affectionate cat I've ever known...

Actually you could - and report them to the RSPCA as well.

Its actually illegal to deny treatment to an animal in need of medical attention and matted coat and flea means the cat needs treatment

I don't live in the best of areas, and people can get really funny if they think you've 'stolen' or 'messed with' their pet. If they looked after him, I wouldn't have to do anything. I really don't want a confrontation, and if I do find the owner, I haven't got a clue what to say.

Is there some sort of law that constitutes what is classified as neglect? I mean, they ARE feeding him, just not grooming him or de-flea-ing. He's not thin, or ill looking. I don't want to go down the RSPCA all guns blazing...I also don't want to end up being punched in the face by kittie's owner for getting his mats shaved off without their consent- not that they should have to give it because they should have done it themselves!

I was in a very very similar situation to pumpa, however 'our' cat was in pretty good condition apart from a bad flea problem. We managed to locate the owner eventually through a process of elimination after finding a local 'cat woman' who lived nearby the owners. We did eventually adopt the cat with the consent (and relief) of the owners who were moving away, with cat destined for the cat shelter. Number one priority is to contact the owner. I think, they may well not have the time to groom the cat, and if with a load of kids around maybe cat is just after some peace and quiet. If you approach them with the right tone, you may find they're grateful for an offer of adoption

I hope it works out for you

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

How did you broach the flea subject with the cat's owners? If they refuse to sort him out or get shirty with me, I don't know where I stand. If I get him treated, and their house/other cats are riddled with fleas he'll just keep getting them back again...

Oh, and not having time to groom the cat is no excuse whatsoever when the cat looks like it has dreadlocks. I have found time to get rid of about half of his mats, and I have a kid, and I'm away for most of the day in the week.

Feeling guilty now because he's sitting here watching me write this and I have to put him out because I'm going out- he gets lonely and wrecks the landing carpet when I'm not here. I'll come back and he'll be waiting at the door for me :(

If I had been in Pumpa's situation, with a cat that had matted fur and fleas my first port of call would have been the vets to see if the animal was chipped. I would not have fed it, allowed it in the house or encouraged it in any way. I don't swallow the whole 'left out in the snow' story. My cat often goes out, sometimes all day, sometimes all night, in the bad weather. She likes it.

I think keeping the cat was wrong.
