Broadband connection keeps dropping out

My broadband connection keeps dropping out if the computer is idle for more than a few minutes.
I have repeatedly contacted the ISP for technical support and their replies are less than helpful to say the least.
One of them says about checking modem settings but I do not know how to do this. Going the technical support side of their website merely repeats the instructions received with the modem.
I have now actually sent 4 emails to them (as their tech support is either by email or an expensive 09 number which I cannot dial anyway) and each time get back very unhelpful 'one liner' replies.
I have just sent them another email now escalating to a complaint about their lack of help with this.
Meanwhile - I would appreciate any help regarding how I can check the modem settings are not set in some way to 'time out' after a while of no activity.
I am running Win XP.
The modem is a Safecom 4 port router connected by ethernet card not USB. (Provided by the ISP)
There is only one other computer connected to it. This has the same problem so we know it must be the modem.
many thanks

This is the second new modem I have had in the few months I have been with them.
I might have to look for something more reliable in the Jan sales - perhaps someone can suggest one to look for?0 -
Are you sure auto disconnect isnt enabled... This is going to sound wierd but I remember having the option for this when I used modems.it will disconnect after a period of inactivity.been using routers for about 4 years so cant remember how to get the option to check it... maybe someone else can tell you if you arent sure0

Hi everyone.
I might have a fix for your problem, however, it will only work if you use a modem. It will not fix any problems with routers.
This is under Windows XP, however, it should be similar under of Windows operating systems:
1.)Go Start --> Control Pannel.
2.)If in Category View, navigate to "Network and Internet Connections". If in classic view, go to "Network Connections"
3.)If in Category view, go to "Network Connections". Ignore this step if in classic view.
4.)Right click and go properties with the connection you are having trouble with.
5.)Navigate to the "Options" tab.
6.)Next to "Idle time before hang up", select never of the desired value.
7.)Click OK.
Hope this works. Let me know how you get on, and happy christmas to everyone!

I am having the very same glitch as I type this. Like helen21 I'm with wanadoo, but have never had problems before, well, an hour ago. It keeps disconnecting at fitful intervals, then I have to reconnect it.
Wanadoo have changed something like the exhange or whatever, as funny enough someone was telling me only yesterday. So I think I shall leave it well alone and only get troubleshooting if it doesn't sort itself out soon.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
