Thanks everyone - that's given me several ideas. My 4 year old has a fabric advent calendar with the Nativity scene (wise men, Jesus & Mary etc) fixed with velcro so he can play with the characters. It also has 24 small pockets to put things in, and up to now I've always just put a few smarties or a chocolate in each one. I thought a hamper wouldn't be any good because very few things would actually fit in the pockets, but there are so many nice things for children to do at Christmas - things that can't be stocking fillers because it would be too late by Christmas Day! (making cards, spraying fir cones, etc).
Anyway, I'm going a long-winded way around this, but I suddenly thought that I could do a hamper with numbered presents, and put a correspoinding number in each pocket in his calendar. That way I could plan when he got each present, for example, the crafty things at the weekend so we've got time to do them. The other advantage is that I wouldn't have to have all the presents ready by the 1st December, as some wouldn't be needed until the third week, so giving me some valuable extra time to put them in. Some of the presents could be 'ordinary' chocs etc, so that the cost is kept down and I only buy the things I think he'd enjoy in the run up to Christmas.
Sorry for such a ramble, but it does seem a good way to spread Christmas out a bit for a young one, rather than having it all and done with on one day.
I'm sure you could do the same thing with an ordinary advent calendar, opening it from the end or the back to put the numbers in then resealing it, leaving the doors intact? My DS would even believe that the numbers got there by magic as it was all sealed when he got it!
That's a great way to spread Christmas. I've got a fabric advent with pockets too and i put ina mixture of small christmassy sweets and small gifts. One year I put messages in some pockets with things like go and tell mummy she's a fish face - which the children did much to their amusement. For that they got one of the fortune telling fishes. It's a great idea to have crafty things for weekends. well done you!0 -

Hi all - have been reading threads but struggling to keep up with you all :rotfl:
I'm sure I have the right thread, very sorry but can't remember the ladys boardname...someone was making a hamper for their mother, bedridden, and wanted to try and get a bed jacket for her hamper. I'm most probably to late, but whilst browsing have spotted one on the bonmarche site. (browsed cos' someone has posted a 40% off printable voucher on the discount board).

I know I am sad lol but I am thinking of making a hamper for myself. I was thinking if I made one for when I got out of hospital it would be something to look forward to and something to help heal type thing but now that I have typed it I am not sure. I think it sounds a bit silly lol, I was thinking if I could get my little girl to help then she would feel she was doing something to help me. Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0

Aw, that sounds lovely.
I'm sure your daughter would appreciate it too - my dad was in hospital seriously ill last year and you feel so helpless when someone you love is in hospital........"Buy me, Lady", said the frock, "and I will make you into a BEAUTIFUL & WHOLE & COMPLETE human being"."Do not be silly", said the Man, "for a frock alone cannot do that"."True", said the Lady, "I will have the shoes and the bag as well".:rotfl:0 -

I don't think that's sad at all, will mean your little girl will feel involved and as you say, she'll feel she is helping you.
Good luck:wave: If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0 -
