Bacon joint

  • I came up with a new one the other day - slow cooked the piece of bacon on a bed of chickpeas with a little water. Then while the bacon rested, drained and cooked the chick peas up with a tin of tomatoes so it was like a little tomato stew to sit alongside the bacon - dash of chilli, ginger and garlic. Served with mash - very nice.

    Hi princessleah,

I imagine you will have cooked your bacon by now so as your thread has fallen down the Old Style board I've added it to the main bacon joint thread to keep the suggestions together.

    Hi,
I am doing a bacon joint for dinner tonight, with mash and parsley sauce, but I want to cook the cabbage in with the bacon-cut into quarters, and stuck in the pot. If I was boiling the bacon on the hob, this would take about 30minutes I think. So how long do you reckon it would take in the slow cooker? About an hour on high? Am planning on doing the bacon for about 4-5 hours if that sound right. Please help :o
    Thanks in advance :)

When I do bacon and cabbage I just take the bacon out of the SC and let it rest while I use the water from cooking the bacon to boil the cabbage on the hob so you can still get all the flavour. Then you won't need to guess the time and also you won't get slimy cabbage - brings back childhood memories. HTH.

Slow cookers are exactly that in my experience- slow lol. But good too :)

At least six hours in my experience does a joint of meat depending on the size, and for really tender meat you are looking at about seven to eight hours.

Oh and apple juice sounds lovely!

Thank you wssla00, I'll go put it in now, my friend is coming for tea when she finishes work at 8pm... should be cooked then.. hehe

Just thought, should I put anything else in with it, veg's seasoning, or just the meat and juice?

I like a few peppercorns and a bayleaf too (but bayleaf gives distinctive herby taste so you may prefer to try that another day). Remember to keep the stock, it'll make fabulous soup.

    Hi hotcookie,

I add a couple of bayleaves, onion, carrot, and peppercorns when I'm cooking a bacon joint. I would think four to five hours is about right because I find bacon and gammon joints can become overdone and too dry if left in the slow cooker for too long, so perhaps check it after four hours.

There's an earlier thread with more advice on cooking a bacon joint in the slow cooker:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
