Brace yourself for replies about the dangers of feeding a baby under 6 months old!
There were always ads for Weetabix and ready brek in the baby leaflets I got. What about toast?
I think it's the salt content you have to watch out for, a lot of adult cereals have dangerously high salt levels.52% tight0 -
when i weaned my little ones, i just pureed our normal food, stored in ice cube trays and freeze, easy to pop out a cube or two at meal times. Juice would be watered down normal juice, or more often just water.0

You need gluten free cereal for babies under 6 months which is hard to find. I would stick with the baby cereals until 6 months, and then move onto normal porridge or weetabix.
I never bothered buying baby juices. At first I just gave them diluted pure fruit juice and then moved them onto ordinary squash when they were a bit older. Here I go again on my own....0 -
I gave mine water - ever so cheap
My friend bought juice for her baby though, and it wasn't even the kind you dilute, it was the ready-diluted type! Very expensive, they got through a lot of it.
She saw the 'contains vitamin C' or suchlike on the bottle and thought it was good for him, but my health visitor told me that if they eat enough fruit or veg then they don't need juice and can drink water.
Sorry the toast comment was daft of me, it's been a while since I weaned my boy
If as becles says it has to be gluten free cereal then there probably isn't anything cheaper, but using water instead of juice will help save money. Making your own babyfood is usually cheaper than buying jars too, although I bought jars when we were out for the day.52% tight0 -
I would avoid baby cereal and juice to be honest - both are high in sugar. The problem with juice as well is that once baby gets a taste for it, it's hard to get them to drink water.
In terms of cereal - oats with fruit puree and their usual milk make porridge - nothing cheaper than a bag of oats! Not sure about their gluten content; you'd have to check. (A lot of baby cereals contain gluten anyway, as the six month thing is "only a guideline").I like you. I shall kill you last.0 -
We bought those juices but we diluted them by another half as they were so strong, i only have the tiniest bit of squash so they were strong by my standards.
I can't abide fruitshoots in my house either, a good quality hugh juice but diluted to the max is my limit here.
Mashed banana's was a firm favorite with ds along with peachy porridge or rice pudding.0 -
how about a baby cereal / natural yoghurt mix - sound disgusting, but my two really loved itGive blood - its free0

I only give my lo water. Why give juice? and baby juice is a complete waste of money.
I didn't wean my lo until 5 1/2 months and didn't give cereal until 7 months - then I used weetabix and readybrek. I mixed them with milk and banana.SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0 -
I would just give them water. They don't need juice as they are getting all their vitamins from whatever milk they have breast or formula at this stage, so juice just gives extra sugar that they definitely don't need. The drinks they have are purely for fluid content. Most baby cereals do contain gluten, unless specifically stated such as Hipp organic. If the ones you have been giving baby do have gluten in and they have had no reactions to them then plain oats and rice will be fine. I agree with the ice cube tray suggestion!! Much easier and if you run out of ideas quite a few people reccommend annabel karmel(sp??) though haven't read it myself. Hope you get a few ideas from this thread as your right baby food is definitely overpriced!!0
