Please recommend a free anti virus for EEEPC 904HD

I have bought my daughter an EEEPC 904HD for Christmas and would like to add a free anti virus program.

I use Avast on my home computer but read in a review that this won't work.
can anyone recommend a program for it.

It runs XP home with 1GB of RAM and a 900MHz Celeron M processor so I guess it can't be anything too 'heavy'

Thanks

AVG is quite bloated compared to Avira Antivir. On a test PC I have, AVG used 38MB of memory, while Antivir uses just 7MB. When I looked at the effectiveness of each antivirus back in January, both stopped 100% of known viruses that were "in the wild", but Antivir had ever-so-slightly better heuristics for unknown viruses. Avast was somewhere in-between the two.

You can download Avira Antivir here:

I've used AVG for years, but ditched it recently because it seems to become more bloated with every release. I'm now using Avira and I'm quite happy with it.

I agree that Avira is the best of the free versions and is approved by a lot of the experts as being better than some of the paid versions. I have it myself, also it does not slow your machine down like some programmes

i recently changed from avg to avira due to the fact avg was using too much resources whereas avira uses less

Thank you for the recommendations I will download Avira Antivir and give it a try.

Any suggestions for firewalls and anti-spywares that aren't too resource hungry would be most welcome too.

This is an anti-malware scanner, not anti-virus.

Editied to add, OP you are now asking about malware.

Can I suggest the OP reads the FAQ and Stickies at the start of this forum, where all these topics, with many recommendations are covered?

Fair enough! To their last post ;)

These topics are very well covered in the FAQ / Stickies at the start of this forum, not sure there is really a need for yet another thread though...

A good start for the OP would be here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=78360
