Beware of unplugging your phone line from your sky box...

Altarf wrote:This is not correct. With a single Sky box (Sky+ or the normal Sky box) you are only obliged to have the box connected for the 1st 12 months. However if you don't connect it Sky are not bothered.
BUT if you have the Multi-Room subscription then you must keep all the boxes connected to the same phone line for ever. If one is not connected Sky do get very concerned about about this and think that you are using the disconnected box at a different address (holiday home, another family member, etc).
Chaffordred, you original and some of your subsequent posts, implied that that you where badly treated by sky because of not having connected your phoneline. If this is not the case then I am sorry for the confusion, but of course sky use the box as a data logger, they would be stupid not too, but there is a reason why you can't buy movies or some interactive content with your phoneline disconnected and why you have to plug it in to do so. What is strange however is that the cards are supposed to limit your spend to about £40 and then lock you out of the pay services until you reconnect and the info is uploaded to sky.JB MIEEE MIET0 -

I also believe sky use the phone line as a data logger, so they can see what people watch and at what times of day, hence the fact that certain programs get moved from free channels to pay ones in order to get more subscribers.
yes, it's common knowledge that the box phones home in the small hours to report back what you've viewed (yes, even those 10 minute freeviews of adult channels!), it's all marketing-related.You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
It maybe worth noting as I haven't seen this in the rest of the thread but when you do a PPV the box stores that on the card, it does not ring out immediatley.
At a time in the month it will call out in the early hours and report on what PPV has been purchased.
It therefore makes it harder for people to unplug the box from the phoneline due to the randomness of when the call will be made, hence the original poster getting a large bill even though they thought they were doing the correct thing by plugging it in at time of purchase.
Perfectly understandable course of action really and I bet many people do it.

Ben
but if a bt engineer does it, he's got nothing to gain has he, i've got nothing to gain as i don't watch ppv movies or sport anymore. so if i get a bill, should i be surprised seeing as sky 'know' my viewing habits?
and am i safe to unplug it without reading the terms?
thanks

:rotfl: You big bunch of meanies! Someone posts a little warning possibly to help others who may not have realised something and you all get up on your high horses, shame on you
Anyways, thanks for the tip I have yet to use box office but will remember to re connect the phone line if I ever do. We don't have ours plugged in because little ones like to press buttons and my nephew has spent a few hours playing those 'free' games on my brothers sky only for his daddy to get a massive phone bill and have to explain to my nephew that the games cost a lot of money. We can't afford any mis haps i'm afraid (the mis hap being my OH getting bored and playing virtal horse racing or having the cats fourtune told!!!)
Anyway, play nicley or I will put you all in the naughty corner :rotfl:0 -

Noticed on my monthly bank statement SKY had withdrawn £242 from my account. When I queried this, the customer services advisor told me because the phone line was unplugged the machine couldn't upload the sky box office details to them, then for some reason last month all the information was uploaded. This information dated back from 2002 and I got charged for it in one lump sum.Need to get rid of my Yankee Candle Habit, Not very money saving of me0 -
flea72 wrote:if the telephone line isnt connected, you cant buy box office films, via your remote control, so if you ordered any films they had to be done over the telephone to customer services, at which point you have to pay an extra £1 admin charge for doing so, and any fees due are automatically added to your next monthly paymentNeed to get rid of my Yankee Candle Habit, Not very money saving of me0

samanthaknd wrote:My partner used to work for RHL (Response Handling Limited, an agent of sky's. callstaff agents)And if you remove your phone line from the box you can (somepeople think) get free movies on box office etc. but heres the tricky part.... when you plug your phone line back in well everything you have done, watched, seen, is then added to your next bill and you could incur charges, for in their opinion trying to beat their system.
Please read the whole thread and you will you see this was not the reason why the box was unplugged.0 -
samanthaknd wrote:actually that isn't true as said in my above post people think they can defeat the system by unplugging the phone line and booking via remote(through ebay some poeple are selling codes to do this lol but none of them work,so if any one thinks of trying this DON'T) but the consequenses are huge!. Even when partner was working with Rhl with sky discount we stuck to telewest, much better!.
Actually, it is true. Read "flea72's" post correctly.0 -
Does the Skybox make the phone call? If so then surely that would appear on my phone bill (which it never has and mine is permanently connected). Is it possible that Sky actually phones the digiboxes in a sequence? I have no idea .. I used to have a great contact in the software development department but he has long left now.
