But surely there is no risk to anyone if they do not put their real names in any way in their MSE user ID, which we are discouraged from doing anyway

Additionally "Here come the girls" is a CLOSED group which means we can not look at each others profiles, unless of course people are buddies anyway.

I'm all for being careful, but if the group is CLOSED and profiles are therefore PRIVATE I can not see how anyone is endangering their privacy or security. The group was changed to the closed status after concerns of this previously to protect everyone as much as possible.

I think the concerns are when people join OPEN groups, then have personal details accessable to EVERYONE on the net etc.

Although really nobody should put their workplace/email/mobile in the forms when you fill in your profile as there are way too many nutters out there! That is where all reported problems have come from so far :)

Oh blink I had just written a huge post and then it got lost so here I go again....

Unfortunately Facebook doesn't quite work like that.

Having a Closed group does not mean other FB users cannot see your profile. It's up to the individual person to ensure that.

When you first set up with FB it automatically (by default) sets your profile to public which means anyone else logged onto FB can view whatever details you have put on there. You can change this access under privacy settings and make it visible only to your friends.

Even when you have done that people can still search for you and will just see a little box with your FB name, geographical network (if you have registered with one) and your profile pic (if you've put one up). You can though make your profile pic only visible to your FB friends so anyone else will just see a Question Mark instead.

If you are worried about what personal info you put on FB then just keep it to a minimum. I don't have my real DOB on their. I know lots of my FB friends do because I get a public reminder of the upcoming date.

Also if you PM somone on FB who isn't your FB friend then they get full access to your profile for a month!!! (this may have changed though?).

So I can see a list of all the members of any FB group regardless of whether it is Closed or Open.

It is down to the individual to protect their own info.

You must remember that even though FB touts itself as a social networking tool it uses very clever targetted advertising. So if you put moutain climbing as one of your interests/activities then you will get adverts about climbing equipment etc. So the FB people aren't your FB friends but can get info from your profiles.

What I do think is great idea that you've done is that everyone messages you to say who they are and then get access. I know before people were messaging publically on the FB group who they were and what their MSE username was.

I've only posted this for those who are thinking of joining FB just to access the boots group on their. It's still a great way to do it just be wary of how much personal info you put up their (same as on here though).

    Rant over.

You can still get the large cadburys choc bars as part of the meal deal.

i want to buy an epilator (don't know why when i can't cope with waxing!) i have quite a few points mostly thanks to you guys and girls and wondered if anyone could reccommend one....preferably one that doesn't hurt!!!! thanks

Don't waste your money hon - waxing is a little tickle compared to using an epilator :p
  • It took me ages to master emails, texting, trying to remember different pin numbers for things, and different passwords, and I don't think I could cope with Facebook as well!

I am always intrigued to see that some people say "Take it from me, xxx is definitely going to be on offer in a fortnight", or "I know it for a fact that zzz is a GWP next week".

How do these people actually know? Is it because their auntie is a SA, or do they go higher up the Chain of Knowledge?

I'm sorry I got carried away before when I first posted, but I was so excited, both for what I'd bought, and because I was well enough to go out that day (got BC), so I shall mosey off to Canary Wharf today with my Freedom Pass, exchange my pinkies and t/s with a SA for various No 7 items, look for reduced bargains that you all seem to find (never seen one in my life!) and buy lots of "anything as long as it's pink" and Mandy Thingys for my grand-daughters' presents to their Mummies!

I counted the spoils from their piggy banks, and I don't think I'd get much for £2.27, so Grandma's going to donate her points.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone.

    xxx

Get one that comes with an ice pack then you hardly feel a thing. Eventually I built up a resistance and didn't need the ice pack but after not using it for a few months it's agony again so back to using the ice pack.

    I'm afraid you can't.......
"Buy me, Lady", said the frock, "and I will make you into a BEAUTIFUL & WHOLE & COMPLETE human being".
"Do not be silly", said the Man, "for a frock alone cannot do that".
"True", said the Lady, "I will have the shoes and the bag as well".

The settings for closed groups have changed :)

They now get access to a 'basic' profile that does not include your pictures or details etc :)

If your a member of the group you can of course see members names, but nobody can work out your MSE username unless you share it on there, therefore there is no scope for abuse if you do not have your actual name in your MSE User id etc

Hi vicki83 I have been using a epilator for several years now and from my point of view it is less painfull than waxing but still hurts a bit. What I have found helps is doing the backs of the legs first as this area is less sensitive and leave the shins until the very last. Its over and done with in 5 mins so not too bad!!

I use a Braun epilator but I think there is not much to choose between the makes - just make sure you use a nice soothing cream afterwards

Just caught up about 20 pages since I checked this morning. Its great seeing so many people on sharing info. Im actually glad to see this weeks ootw I actually NEED a new hairdrier and couldn't afford one, I will hopefully use my points on it this weekend.

BTW I just did my nosey on "the other forum" as ive never ventured there, its a bit pants to be honest, only a handful of people on, they all seem to lurk here for the tips and good chat. :rotfl: this is the best forum around, I love coming on here and having a laugh and saving money at the same time.

I post regularly on the "other" forum, there are quite a few of us who are active members of both forums who post regularly on both and we are not just lurkers. - we contribute as well!

I like the "other" forum as it is smaller and at times more friendlier than MSE (not talking about this thread though - its very friendly).

That's good to know. But I got into the boots group and could see a list of all the members and lots of them had profile photos too that I could see without being their FB friend nor a member of that group. Obviously I cannot post on it nor see what's been posted.
The same works for anyone looking me up too regardless of how they find me.
