  • Good luck..
wear something you feel comfortable but good in..
have some questions to ask them..take them in a notebook if you want ..
I would even take notes of what they are telling me if needs be or ask if you may

take extra time to answer if you need .. better to be seen as thoughtful..but do try to keep answers clear and succint..you can always ask them if you need to elaborate more but you can't take back ..a longwinded waffle:rolleyes:

If you are not sure about an answer you could always say I'm not sure about that I would like some more information or, I would like to learn more about that I think that is an area that I would like your guidance on improving my knowledge on ...which is something I am happy to do..

See what I am saying make any negatives positive
you could even add on to last comment I'm a quick learner

Be yourself , give a good firm handshake and don't forget to smile..address questions to specific people if they have specific interests on a panel

Show you have done some research about job, company even key people
eg new dept being set up because of someones special project..

If they ask you about previous work be specific about what you did and achieved, learnt from the job..and possible say how that would be useful to this job

    enough:rotfl:

And do say Thank You when you leave and another smile?

    Great stuff - thanks!
  • Glad I could be of use..had a totally pants day yesterday..so nice to know I can do something ..bit rusty now...but I think you get the jist

  • Hi All

Long time lurker and first time poster, and I'm having a similar problem to Holeypockets, except that I was not given an interview..

The job was in a well known London institution and I am quite sure that I met the essential criteria and was a very suitable candidate.

They are not aware of what my disability is, as the application form only asks for a general description.

After applying (which you must do online), I did not hear anything from them for 3 weeks. I then received an email saying something along the lines of "thank you for attending the recent interview but unfortunately you were unsuccessful" - umm, what interview? I promptly emailed them back asking for clarification - they replied saying it was a system error and then sent me an automated email saying my "application had been unsuccessful".

Clearly a candidate had already been selected for the job, so, having grudgingly accepted that I won't even get the chance to impress them in interview, I emailed them to (kindly) ask whether I met the essential criteria. This was Thursday morning, and they haven't got back to me..and I don't really expect they will.

Obviously there was some kind of either human or system error, and maybe I did just "slip through" but what is the point in taking part in the Two Tick Scheme is they do not adhere to it? Maybe I misunderstood the scheme...?

It's extremely disheartening..I don't know where to take it from here and would really appreciate any advice.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi img and welcome

I was once advised by the Disability Rights Commission (who now come under the umbrella of the Equal Opportunities & Human Rights Commission) that if you think you have been discriminated against that you can write to the HR Department and ask them for a copy of their marking matrix for the interview, copies of all the other applicants' application forms (suitably censored for Data Protection reasons) and in particular the application form from the successful applicant - this is so that you can judge whether or not you met their criteria. Ask for this information under the Disability Discrimination Act. You can also speak directly to the above Commission who will put you through to a Disability Advisor who will be able to advise you further.

I did once take a prospective employer to an employment tribunal for failing to offer me an interview despite my meeting their criteria - I even had to contact their Australian HQ to find out their policy on employing disabled people. Well, I had the interview and withdrew my tribunal claim but didn't get the job - I wouldnt have taken it had it been offered, the reason for not getting it "You do not understand the needs of disabled people" - excuse me, not one employee of that company understood the needs of a disabled person, they are an organisation who won a contract from the government to provide jobseeking advice to disabled people and those long-term unemployed and 16 year olds (not jobcentre plus). I saw the way their staff spoke to disabled people and I was appalled, at first I was quite cross but in other ways I am glad because now I am my own boss which is fab.

    It's HR - must be human error...:D
  • Thanks for the info Horace.

So under the DDA I can ask for other candidates' applications forms etc, but they are "not compelled to reply" . That's annoying.
I don't want to take it to tribunal, as frankly, I have enough on my plate right now, but I don't believe they should be allowed to be part of the Two Ticks Scheme if they are not going to honour it as I know I won't be the only person affected by their ineptitude.

I will email them tomorrow with your suggestions for what I am allowed to ask but I have low expectations for a reply. Wish me luck!
