I've just done a search ad found this thread which answers my problem. I'm wondering if it's ok to buy ram on ebay, if not does anyone know a cheap site?

If you have maybe 4 slots in the system for RAM, and say only 2 are used, maybe you could fill the other two with 512MB each, and add an extra 1024 MB to the system.

Then you can completely disable the Virtual Memory, because you have plenty of RAM. Your system will run much faster then!!

Ok, so I've ordered the RAM from crucial.com, thanks to Albertross for that.

So how do I disable the Virtual Memory after the RAM is in the PC?

There should be no need to disable it, if you have enough ram for the tasks in hand, the PC will use that, if not, it will swap to the pagefile. So it will only slow up if you really run out of ram.

Just to let you know. I ordered the RAM from Crucial and it arrived two days later. Yesterday I took a deep breath and opened up my pc for the first time, with the instructions that I'd previously looked at on Crucials website I had it installed and running in 5 minutes! The pc is now zipping along!

Thank you to everyone who helped me.
