right all set up. downloaded the firmware, found it using browse then when I click update it comes up Invalid filename was provided please enter again *.img)

are you on the router upgrade (firnware upgrade) screen of the router config?

no I had to disconnect the router because once I lost connection (after about 5 mins) I couldnt get it on again, That thing came up saying 'limited or no connectivity'

You have to be connected to the router to upgrade the firmware..

Can you connect to it using an ethernet cable (if you have one).

Yes I know, I was connected to the router via ethernet, but my connection only lasts about 5 mins. I got onto the http://192.168.1.1 and clicked the upgrade. I downloaded the firmware the using the browse, located the file and clicked update. Then I get a message saying 'invalid filename was provided please enter again *.img) The firmware is a .bin file (which I've never heard of) and says it must be compressed if it doesnt automatically, well I dont know how to do that. Then I loose internet connection altogether and get the message 'limited or no connectivity' hope this makes sense and thankyou for trying to help me.

Could you just confirm your router model, and post the link to where you got the upgrade file from.. it is usually a .img file for netgear.., not .bin..?

Are you accessing it from the knowledge base link at the bottom of the router config screen?

Not sure why it is losing the connection after 5 minutes, if you are directly connected, try turning of wireless in the router config screen, and then doing an ipconfig /release

and ipconfig /renew

to make sure you are connecting using ethernet instead of wireless..

ok Ill connect the router again and turn off wireless. please can you explain the ipconfig thing.
