Ryanair set for £8 flights to US

This forum would become unbearable if Ryanair started flights to the US!
Considering that most legacy carriers lose money on economy seats on the transatlantic routes the difference between £43flights (on BA) and E8 (on Ryanair) is really minimal, it will only be a headline story once Ryanair have established what their taxes and charges actually are. Everyone would be going crazy if BA exec's were mouthing off about their £43 headline fares, which is actually what they are already charging for flights this month to New York.
Anyone that thinks that £250-£300 inclusive for a 7-9 hour return flight is expensive needs their head examined! And for that reason I cannot see this ever actually happening.
Like Phuket Air, Oasis Air, Laker, Zoom (and just how often will Air Asia X delay their launch???) and loads of other airlines who have failed, many before they even started this is a business model doomed to failure.0 -
Publicity stunt, you will never get a flight to the US for £8.

I am not keen on flying Ryanair short-haul after my experience with them, I wouldn't even think of flying with them long-haul!!!! What about leg space, drinks and snacks? You can't just wait without any drink for 8+ hours as people do on the European flights. You HAVE to drink, and that means that is one more area for Ryanair to cash in! Just the thought of taking Ryanair for long haul scares me off!!!
Then you take your drinks and snacks on board with you which you purchase in the departure lounge before your board, simple as really.
I would almost put money on ryanair never flying to the US and the main reason for that is the americans US customs and border protection, I cant really go into the ins and outs of it but suffice to say the americans would'nt put up with his practices.
all the best

I think they will end up flying there however the £8 is the ticket cost not the airport taxes which are set by the airports etc and these will make the £8 more like £200 and to be honest I hate a 3 hr flight with them never mind a 7 hr one with no leg room and rubbish service let alone having to sit next to some random stranger if i don't join the waiting queues quick enough.

The thought makes me shudder, fine for short jaunts to the continent, but transatlantic, definitely not. A rough guess:
Ticket: £8
Taxes: £100 ?
Suitcase: £50 (say, twice European charge)
Lunch: £10
Airport check-in: £10
Couple of drinks: £10
Entertainment: £20
Priority boarding: £5
Credit/Debit card charge: £20
Wheelchair levy: £5
Then, add in the cost of getting to where you want to go from some remote airport. Suddenly, that £8 fare is looking comparable to the likes of BA who offer protection should something go wrong.
I could tolerate it for say, a weekend break with just hand-luggage, on-line check-in. But for anything else, no.Being brave is going after your dreams head on0 -

The thing is, you'll have more choice. If you don't think Ryanair offers good value or suitable facility then you don't have to fly with them.0 -

And add in the costs of inconveniently timed flights - eg I went to LA last year and there was a flight for £40 less, but I didn't feel it was worth it when I factored in other costs. The arrival/departure times were very late/early which meant that I'd have to pay for expensive cabs or pay to park my car instead of getting a lift or using public transport.0 -
Ryan Air is great.
Play by the rules and it is cheep.
3 hour flight...take a packet of sunflower seeds and if you can't or don't want to pay another 2.50 for a coffee then fill a water bottle up from the sinks in the restroom airside.
For a 10 pound flight what do you people want for goodness sake!
You know about the card charges and the baggage resirictions. Get a Visa electron card and dont take the !!!! with your hand bagage.

If O'Leary does start offering these flights for that price, I'll bite both his hands off! And I wouldnt put it past Ryanair.
He might well have been talking about delays in production of possible aircraft for this route. I heard they were going to use either the Boeing 787 which is delayed until late 09 or the Airbus A350 which is due to enter service in 2013.
Seems a strange move to make at the moment, particulary with the rise in oil prices (which have significantly affected profits).
However, forgetting everything else, I'd certainly snap up some tickets!!0
