Menu for bonfire night?

    We used to do this as children - always had a big party cos it was my dad's birthday. This is a communal bonfire, though, and we only have a tiny yard and couldn't have a fire of our own. They were yummy though!

    I don't think you can beat a glazed gammon for feeding a crowd. I would do Nigella's ham in coke - or possibly in ginger ale. How about a chili con carne on the hob for the spice eaters and an oven full of jacket spuds with sour cream and/or grated cheese alongside for dolloping on top? Salad, possibly some coleslaw and some hunks of bread should see everyone satisfied. I think your DD should be able to avoid the chili and still eat well.

    For afters, just do something you can make ahead: your pineapple upside down cake sounds good. Ice cream as you have said, I would be wondering where the crumble is going to be cooked, so I wouldn't do that one if it was me. (I like make ahead things if there is an audience. ;) )

    How about (if there's room on the hob) some mulled cider or wine? Replace the cider with apple juice if everyones driving or for the kids.

    That sounds good, Morwenna, and it doesn't put my cookware under strain (I only have one big casserole and if that's in the oven there's not much room for anything else). I must look up the ham in coke recipe! Another idea I just had was to make it a pear and chocolate cake, because then I can do some chocolate sauce which can be poured over either the cake or the ice cream or both. The cake would warm up in the microwave, I think.

    Mulled wine ... that's not a bad idea! It's quite possible that DH will not be with us at the bonfire as DS is a bit of a scaredy boy and probably would prefer to watch from the balcony upstairs. It's not a great view, and you have to pick your way over DS's bedroom floor, so we can't do that for everyone, but it would help with the timing if DH was here!

    Wrap the sirloin around an asparagus spear and shove a coctail stick through.

    Cold Quiche, Chutney and a salad bowl.

    Jackets with mixed potato & chppped gammon topped with cheese and popped under the grill just before serving.

    Silver throw away pie dishes (Wilkinsons) filled with cooked leeks, bacon/gammon/ham covered in cheese sauce, topped with grated cheese and popped under a grill at the last min or left in the bottom of the oven while you are out.

    Stuffed tomatoes with savoury rice or grated cheese

    Prawns on top of circles of Bread with creamy cheese.

    Parkin slices, Treacle toffee. Popcorn & Toffee apples.

    I would do Jackets in the oven with a range of fillings. It's definitely a tradition.

    Or, where we live (in the north) it is practically the law to have meat and potato pie with red cabbage. Then parkin for pud;
    • 1 lb. Pinhead oatmeal
    • 1/2 tsp. bicarbonate soda
    • 1 lb. Dark treacle
    • 2 tbsp. demarara sugar
    • 1/4 lb. butter
    • 1 tbsp. milk
    • 1/2 oz. Ginger
    Rub butter into oatmeal, add ginger and sugar.
    Melt treacle.
    Dissolve soda in milk.
    Mix everything together.
    Line baking tin with well greased paper and pour in mixture.
    Bake in a low to moderate oven for 1/2 - 3/4 hour.

  • Hi all

    I am hosting a small casual get together at the weekend for fireworks.

    I am after a few ideas on what to serve up for supper.

    I am doing a soup to go in mugs while watching the big bangs, and then want something to be sitting in the oven to come out when the fireworks have finished.

    Does anyone have a winning dish?
