Mine still remember going to watch the trains! We lived near a main line station with a good view from the cafe!
Do you have a children's centre in your area? It might be called sure start or may be attached to a school. Your health visitor may be able to help as well.

I can still remember now a family day trip on the bus to the airport to watch the planes take off!
  • Hi - I was a SAHM for 6 years and I really loved it. I really miss it now. Forget the house (mine was ok -but not spotless) and go for
1/ arts and crafts - leaf pictures, clay modelling and finger painting are some of the best
2/ baking -even little ones can make pastry jam tarts and make/ choose their own lunches to put on a plate - we had some WILD 'salads' : ham, cheese, egg and sweetcorn with WOTSITS was one that was actually quite nice!
3/ even babies like looking at their baby pictures and ones of their parents - that always passes an hour or so.
4/ Gardening (in all weathers) - get on the wellies and potter....
5/ Read books as often as you can. we used to read 3/4 little books a day.
6/ watch TV with your child - don't just plonk them in front of it. We once had a lovely day looking at different drainpipes after watching Auntie Mabel and Pippin the dog!! (The kids idea -not mine!!)
7/ Go on a double decker bus to the library/park or somewhere and sit at the front on the top deck - breath-taking fun for a toddler!!
And if it all seems to be getting on top of you try to imagine the future when they go to school and they stop being your little one and start being influenced by everyone else  it really does come too soon....
    :rotfl: :rotfl:
    Quite keen moneysaver......

I used to spend ages painting the outside housebricks with water and a paint brush apparantly!!!
The netmums is a good site. Think there are lots of great suggestions here.

Cardboard boxes can be very entertaining..stacking smaller ones for towers, fruit boxes make boats, cars etc for pushing your little one around in or pretend beds with a blanket. If you can get some really thick stuff (triple layered, cut it up and tuck one side of the box under the sofa cushions leaving another side to hang down as a small slide. It kept ours amused for weeks and folded away behind the sofa at bedtime. Just keep your eyes peeled for good ones as you walk around the supermarket. Also turning shoeboxes into doll's houses when they are a bit older. HTH

LOL at this one, I have a very similar memory involving a paintbrush, some water, and a wooden fence!
  • Just to say to OP also - when my DS was about 1yr I thought I was going to go mad! I adore my kids but am not really a baby person (if that makes sense?). It almost seems criminal to admit to boredom when you have been blessed with children but I was VERY bored and a bit out of my depth to be honest. I was in a similar situation financially to you.

My DS is now 2 1/2 and I can't wait for him to get up in the morning. We have a lovely time together and a real laugh.

If you're wondering if it will get easier it certainly does - well for me anyway.
Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet...

Last year The Children's Society published a free book called Batteries Not Included, which proved really popular. They're doing the same thing this year and are going to promote it in the media over the next few weeks.

"The book shows how spending quality family time together doesn't have to revolve around expensive toys and gadgets. In fact, some of the best times can be had for free, from fun family games to practical ideas you may never have heard of."

You can order it free here:
