Ed, not necessarily. In years to come more and more older people who need support will recieve it in their own homes and those who move to residential care will be far physically and mentally frailer than the current residents.

One reason for this change is that residential care is very expensive and people and councils will get a bigger bang for their buck if they're supported in their own homes or move to supported independant living accommodation.

Another very important reason is that people who receive care in their own homes thrive better and live longer than those who move into residential care.

In the past 30 years we've moved from shoving older people with dementia into large psychiatric hospitals where they had to 'live' on a ward with 10 others to having a single room in a care homes.

Errata you have been so supportive throughout my posts and your views have prooved invaluable for which I thank you :A

However, my Nan was in her own home and under council care she required medication at certain times during the day, carers were not reliable and she would go all day without the care she needed:confused: Although this service was paid for this led her to be unwell and when it was looked into it all boiled down to people being overworked and MONEY!! There was no claim for compensation (what is the point in taking compensation when there is never enough money) our priority was to get Nan somewhere where she would be safe, cared for and loved for the person she is today. This was a care home.

I am sorry if I come across a little forth right it's just I feel there are a number of people out there pretending to do their job when they clearly don't.

I am fortunate enough to be a part of a very forward thinking retirement village:D that has only the wishes and needs of the happiness and well being of their residents at heart. If a resident wishes to cook a lunch for a friend then they can, if they wish to have a glass of wine or a midnight snack then they can. It's new I know but let me tell you I have already thrown a towel on a bed for 30 years time.

Hey listen to me being fortunate enough to be a part of:D

I can't help it I think the world of this village x

That's really rather what I meant - anyone who uses the internet regularly knows how much of a help it can be just with simple things like ordering shopping online - or communicating with other people such as on forums like these.

The potential for developing other aspects to help people live independently is as yet untapped.

We may well find that the current care home concept effectively disappears to be replaced by at home care/assisted living/sheltered housing and something pretty close to a hospital for the very ill and frail.

No doubt at some point they will also find a method of treating or preventing dementia as well which would obiously make a huge difference..
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Hi again. How about getting a web cam so those who have relatives and friends a long way away can chat.
Could you ask someone to give computing lessons?
It sounds like you are going to have a fab time, just hope the internal candidate wasn't too put out.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

They have a web cam already they are really on the ball:D I don't think that the computer gets used much, hopefully I will change that as it is in the same room as my desk so I will be able to help anyone who wishes to use it.

I hope the internal candidate isn't too put out also, I feel bad in a way. I will go and see her when I start and ask her advice on the residents that she cares for and run things by her so that she feels involved, I do hope that she is ok with me, I'm sure that she will be as to work in this area you need to be a nice person.

Just a thought. You may want to do a risk assessment around which internet sites people shouldn't be accessing and check if - ahem - 'naughty' things can be blocked. I'm sure you know what I mean - strange things sometimes happen 'by accident'.-
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
