selling your stuff on Amazon...part 2

  • Hi voodoo, I have a Lilian Too feng shui book on swapit if you want it for reference, it's only small but has lots of info in it, it won't sell for anything but if you want it I'll be happy take one of your swaps. It's called Eight Easy Lessons.

This book is a classic example of a book on swapit linking to the wrong photo on Amazon, the book in reality is only a penny listing, on swapit it shows it to be over £1.00.

When I chose a book now for swapping I don't assume that the link is acurate, I check out the others on Amazon with the same title and assume that the lowest price book is the one that is up for grabs.

I have a query I know we dont want any 1p sales as these are a waste of time(unless very light),but when do you class a book worthy of profit,I tend to think about £1 plus the P&P but would be interested to know how you rate your books this way?Its just I noticed a book on the swapit forum from one of us and it was going for £2.75 on amazon and if that had been me I would have hung on to it?

Perhaps it was me as I had an Angela wanting swapsies last night :D

I don't know if you saw one of my previous posts but I've noticed that often the edition that they link to at amazon can't be trusted at all. A lot of my books show as being worth something, but I can assure you that my version is almost always only worth a penny ;)

I had a few swaps offered last night, but I think it was your books that included a feng shui book which seemed to be worth a fair bit, but on closer inspection, the title of the book shown at amazon was a totally different title to the one on offer, which when I looked it up was worth.....you guessed it.....a penny!! It is really bizarre the way they link to amazon, I just can't work out how they do it. Sometimes it's the right one, other times they can't even find it, but if you do your own search it comes up.

I suggest that if there's a title you fancy, look it up yourself on amazon to see how many other editions there are and what sort of used price is shown. If there are low priced versions, I give it a miss.

Saying that, I do have a cut off point dependant on the weight of the book. For instance one of my books is worth about 50-60p from memory, but it's heavy to post. I figure that if I request a valuable swap and someone wants it then I'm happy to pay the postage, but if someone else requests it as a swap and none of their books warrant the postage, then I'll say no thanks.

Also, whenever someone requests one of my books, I'll look it up on Amazon to make sure that I haven't made a mistake in listing on readitswapit. If I think it's worthwhile selling on amazon, I can always say no to the swap.

When I sell on amazon, I aim to make at least a couple of quid out of books to make the trip to the PO worthwhile. CDs I'll sell for less as they fit in the post box round the corner from my house!
  • Hi angelcake - welcome to the thread :hello:

I'm not quite sure how you can point someone from ebay to amazon - there isn't the same loyalty issue on Amazon that you can get on ebay. I offer a returning buyers discount on ebay which encourages people to looking at my listings each week because they hope that I'll be offering something similar to what they bought a few weeks ago.

With my Amazon books I don't have many that would appeal to the same buyer. If I was to put in my ebay listing that my Amazon name is xxx the buyer would have to search for it (I doubt if ebay would want a link in the listing) and when they found my book list if it doesn't have what they are looking for they know that the list will still be the same next week or next month with just a few new ones being added every week. It would be hard to encourage a sale that way.
  • I've just spent and interesting hour - I had a look at my book list on swapit and clicked on each book in turn, horrors! there were about a quarter of them with no link through to amazon (I had listed them and just walked away not looking back to check) none of them had dodgy spellings so it wasn't that - I cancelled them and listed them again, same problem, so now they all have notes in the description with the ISBN number to search...don't know if the swapees can be bothered tho...

I'll have a look for your feng shui book AT...I didn't want it to sell but to aid me to improve my finances!!! I have been following the thread and have bought an M&S book on it but still finding it hard to grasp (especially with all these boxes of books kicking about!!!)

Has anyone any experience of book fairs? My OH came home with a couple of leaflets and I wondered if it was worth a try.

PS. Some of my books on swapit ARE worth more than a penny but still under a pound cos' the way I see it that only pays the 86p so for me its not worth it. If you need further details about any of my books I'll happily oblige!!! Some of my books may be good to read too...I do have a VERY wide range because I got a free box from a posh lady and an ageing hippy!!!

I only tend to swap with books that are worth at least £3.50 on Amazon.

Changing the topic for a minute....I sold a CD single last night to someone in Northern Ireland. Now I know it's UK but do I have to go to the post office with it or can I just put stamps on and put it in a post box as I often do with small bits. Does going to PO ensure that it's sent quicker (eg by air rather than boat) or doesn't it make any difference? Thanks. PS Voodoozoe, I saw one of your books on Readitswapit that I liked the other day to complete the trilogy I have but I haven't got around to listing any of mine yet, they'd all be 1p anyway. I will keep a look out for a Feng Sui book for you.
  • If you aren't worried about compensating the owner if it gets lost then I'd throw it in the post box, it won't make any difference to the outcome.

Yes I know, I already do that but it's because it's going to Northern Ireland and I want to make sure it goes by air rather than boat, didn't know if they'd do that it it was in a post box. Thanks anyway
