Thanks everyone! So far I'm quite liking the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix, and actually a couple of my friends have that one. Quite tempted with the Isofix base too - though it's unlikely to get a full year's use, but I'm such a nervous mummy!

All your help is really very much appreciated :)
  • Hi,

Check out this web site http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/ It has all the rear facing car seats that are available in the uk and a few ways of importing them too.

I am shocked that people are suggesting that a child should not be rear facing at the age of 4 due to possible ridicule! What a silly comment to make. Have a look at the Which? in car tests with the crash test dummies and then tell me that a child should be turned around so that they aren't laughed at. I feel that rear facing car seats are becoming more popular now anyway, I am sure that they will soon become the norm and hopfully mandatory.

So you are a mother of one child that is less than a year old and you know about the anguish of 4 year olds? I think not!

How rude! I am saying that a mother who suggests that ridicule is worse than paralysation or even death has perhaps not thought about the comment very much. Take a proper look at the web site I suggested. The anguish of a 4 year old as you have put it would be far worse if they were unfourtunate enough to be involved in a serious accident and their injuries could have been less had they been rear facing. What you do with your child is up to you, I was simply providing a link to an informative website.

This site is really good and very informative:eek:
My parents always ensured we travelled rear facing until we were teens. Of course this was before booster seats etc, we had rear facing seats that fitted in the back of an estate car. It is a bit different now I guess!!

IMHO travelling in a car is one of the most dangerous things that our children do everyday, especially as cars are used so much more frequently now. Anything that makes it safer gets a thumbs up from me!!

Actually I found your implication offensive so there you go. I have seen the videos previously thank you. that is why my 19 month old is still rear facing.

Think about it this way. Children are cruel-fact. If i sent my DD to school in a "baby" seat then she would probably be bullied for it. She has already been bullied by one child in nursery and this made her very miserable. To start school life being bullied can have long term mental effects. Children commit suicide because they are bullied! Maybe not at 4 years old but once the bullying started do you think children would stop because she came out of that seat?

As the rear facing car seats you are refering to are suitable up to approximately the age of 8 I assume your child will remain rear facing until then? I doubt it.

Somethings just aren't that simple. I make decisions for all my children and I do what I believe is best for them taking into account all factors. I leave others to do the same. I do not come on here and criticise those that do less than the "ideal" for their children because I do not know the full picture and I expect others to give me the same respect.

ETA: Looking at the specific link you gave they say
"Did you know that children younger than 4 years old
are safer if they travel rear facing in the car?"

Even that site doesn't suggest keeping them rear facing until 8!

I did not mean to offend, simply to inform others. It did not menton anything about being rear facing until the age of 8. I do not know what I plan to do in 7 years time right now. I do not consider your argument to be good enough for me to consider not using a rear facing seat for a school age child. Children are bullied for wearing glasses but you would not tell them they should not wear the glasses to the detriment of their eye sight becasue of this. I am not critiseing your choices, as I have already stated I was hopeing that the information on the site I suggested might help others and perhaps yourself see that there is a real need for a child of school age to remain rear facing. It was not a critisim, I felt the need to point out the facts. I would not have usually become so involved, I am however aware that there is a large amount of interest in rear facing car seats currently and I would like to actively encourage this. The site I suggested has been extremly useful to me and I hoped it might help others.

I am going to leave this here. I do not wish to waste my time agrueing. I have made my point and I am happy that the information I have given will help others.

I can see nowhere on the site that mentions school age children should be rear facing. It is one thing giving a link to information, it is another extrapolating that information with no furhter evidence. The only part that gets near to saying keep a school age child rear facing is when they say to keep them rear facing as long as possible but they do not mention an age. The special needs car seat they refer to goes up to 25kg which is the weight of the average 8 year old boy. If as you say you believe they should remain rear facing as long as possible regardless of mental health I don't see why you can not state now that you will do this with your child.

Come back in 7 years and show me the pic of your child in its rear facing seat and I'll send you £50.

No, you said your daughter was 4 and already at school, that is why I refered to a child of school age in regards to your suggestion of bullying being an issue. Anyway, as I said I do not want to argue. I have not made a personal attack on you, please do not do so to me.
  • Sorry to those of you who have been using this thread. I did not mean for it to turn into an argument and I hope it has not distracted from the point. This is just something I feel very strongly about and I am eager to help others gain the correct information. Many appologies.
