When trick or treaters call

This year our local police have produced and delivered card for us to put up saying 'No Trick or Treaters Thank You'. I think this is an excellent idea, I don't agre with trick or treating and I don't want them ringing the doorbell and making my dog bark. My neighbours are elderly and they never answer the door in the evening so the notice will be ideal for them.0

I think that the card idea is something we can do for our elderly neighbours, it is all about respect for each other - only I do understand that some people do not have this. I do not agree with late callers - it is anti-social and tends to be teenagers so I do ignore these. I tend to joke with them if they are not dressed up, once 'trick or treat' time is over I blow the candle out on the pumpkin.
Toto, my son is ASD and he is shy about dressing up - but wants to get dressed up and today was running around with his sisters skeleton outfit on so I am looking forward to traipsing around in the freezing cold just because it is so nice to see him looking forward to it!! He like to go trick or treating but usually in his coat and jeans, LOL, he is 4 by the way!!0 -

And you are in Hertfordshire too, just like us
I can honestly say last year was the first year my daughter understood what was going on. She adores cats so she gets to go as a black cat and she loves it. She still hates wearing clothes at all which is a nightmare at times, especially as she isn't a little girl anymore, but she does love dressing up in her cat suit and getting her pumpkin bucket out asking to go and say trick or treat. It is so lovely to see them start to understand things and get excited about them isn't it.:A

Yes, absolutely. The last school she was at did nothing to help him really. We had to move and I was reluctant to move him but it is the best thing I ever did. He seems to have turned a huge corner. When it was time to dress up for the Xmas play last year he had a huge tantrum and refused to put the costume on (as I had told them he would do) and so they told him if he did not dress up then he could not go to the class Xmas party...... I kept him off school so he was not in the play and could go to the party which is what he wanted to do.
Hopefully things will be better this year as the new school seem more understanding of his condition. The old school were great in initially getting him help (probably as he was so disruptive) but they had no clue on everything else that went with it and did pathetic things like trying to blackmail him into doing something he did not want to do.
He wants to dress up now - I am sure that at 4pm it might be different. We shall see....0 -
On our estate we get quite a few trick or treaters, and the basic rule is 1 or 2 swets each. Most of us arent particulary well off. I will be doing the pumpkin thing in the window but thats about it.
I only usually do it until about 8.30 then thats it, any way the dog barks and can scare anyone - he a little dog with a HUGE bark lol
I just hope we dont get eggs thrown around againBSC member 137

My mum is the deputy head of her primary school so she always gets the children from her school trick or treating. They are all polite and all look great in their costumes.
This is my first year in my flat with BF and our residents association also gave out paper pumpkins to put on our doors. not expecting to many children as there arent alot of familys in our building and it is a gated community but have bought sweets to give out before we go off to a party around 8.30pm ish bought would suspect all the children will be back home by then0 -
I don't mind too much about late callers. But I don't think my husband will be too impressed if anyone interrupts his viewing of the last episode of Charlie Brooker's Dead Set.:D That's on pretty late though.
Our resident's association sent around paper pumpkins to tape to the door if we want callers. And we only have a tiny front garden so it will be visible.
Is he scared they might make dead set seem more real? I have been watching it and I have to say it is erm ... bizarre lol
For the person who commented on teaching your children that you give us sweets or we shove something nasty through your door.
Sorry but not everyone is like that ... My son is 6 and whilst we only go around to familys house and close friends I have never taught him or will teach either of my children (my daughter is too young) that they should trick! No one has ever asked for a trick! and agreen with the other person that the people generally like seeing them in their costumes!Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Personally I love trick or treat - we already have our stuff up ready so my girls get to enjoy it all day. We just go around our road & I do think 1 item is enough (they come home with so much).
I always have loads in & it is amazing how many children go for fruit (always have sweets, little plastic spiders & oranges in the bucket).
A few years ago I put a note on the door saying come back in 30 mins as I was putting the baby to bed & nobody knocked! I don't know if anyone did come back (they usually go up & down roads )

I used to play big style. One year I bought special paper which was meant to look like an old castle type wall and completely covered our hall in it. (Thank God for Blu Tac.
) I had plastic skeletons chained to the ceiling and cardboard gravestones along the walls. It looked very 'dungeonish' and was quite effective imo. When the kids called...they nearly wet themselves as it was quite scary looking.:rotfl:
I made up little bags with monkey nuts, an apple and some sweets in. That way, the kids didn't really know what they were getting and it was easier handing them over I felt.
This year....the youngest wants to go out herself with just her friends which suits me as I can't really be bothered with it all this year. (Only I'll be following her at a discreet distance.)

I never went trick or treating as a child but I do take my daughter who loves it, in fact she has been looking forward to it for weeks and was so excited when she woke up this morning. We are spending the day with friends, carving pumkins and the girls are going to add wash-out streaks to their hair and read spooky stories.
Then as soon as it goes dark we are going around the village trick or treating, the village is quite small and lots of children will be out, there will be lots of houses decorated so we will probably just stick to them as we don't want to disturb elderly people or people that would rather we didn't call.
