I've recently ordered some veg seeds from Simpsons Seeds after looking through their catalogue. They seem to be better value from those you can buy from garden centres who will have virtually run their stocks out now until sowing season next year. Simpsons also offer a wide choice of varieties. Website is www.simpsonsseeds.co.uk and my order arrived by return of post. You can also request a catalogue via their website.

I got some very cheap seeds form Wilco's last week, but if they have all gone, then look at www.alanromans.com for your own seeds.

There is a small postage charge but because the seeds are in basic foils not pretty packets, they are very light and the cost of many packs is still only 50p each.

If you have a local Wyvale try there, ours is selling off a lot of seeds veg, herbs and flowers etc for 10 pence a packet. Got a few myself today.
  • Hi - SeedDirect.co.uk are definitely a contender for best value.

Looking at AlanRomans.com for Broad Beans (which are just about the only thing being planted in the open at the moment) and they offer only 28 seeds for 80p with P&P of 90p. This works out at 6p a seed.

SeedDirect offer 60 Seeds for 95p with P&P of 65p.This works out at less than 3p a seed!

SeedDirect are v cheap, and when i ordered last week my seeds arrived on time - no bother. I'd recomend them.

    Cheers

We just order these for next year, 20 different packs of veg seeds for £8 including postage.
The seller does a 30 pack bundle and herb packs. They will let you mix and match, we added a few herbs to the 20 veg seed packs for an extra quid.

  • I know that these guys have a huge range in as I went to their garden centre yesterday. Very well stocked and using the 'free' delivery code 'G2UOCT08' gets them sent straight out...

I picked up a mushroom kit (Mr. Fothergill's Marvellous Mushrooms) and will report back how things go.....

You may not plant stufff in the open but there is hordes of stuff that can be got going and then set out as seedlings, or evne broadcast under a bot of protection.

i decided to have a look on your recommendation and things seems a little more complex than you suggest. Amongst other things the seeds direct prices only apply until December 1st.

Given your previous comparision of price per seed (as per Seeds direct own publicity) I compared them with Romans. By the way, I have only ever bought from Romans once or twice as I get most of my basics through the allotment, if I do not save the seed myself. I also occasionally buy from real seeds and Simpson's.

    leaf beet

    romans 250 seeds for 50p
Seeds Direct 100 seeds for 95p

turnip (comparing Snowball and Golden Ball)

    Romans 1650 seeds for 50p
    Seedsdirect 400 seeds for 95p

    Lettuce All year round

    Romans 1500 seeds for 50p
    Seedsdirect 400 seeds for 95p

    Runner beans

Romans approx 44 seeds for 80p
Seeds direct 15-25 seeds for 95p

Tomatoes - gardener's delight is about the only one they both do

    Romans 100 seeds for 50p
Seeds direct 50 seeds for 95p

Romans charges 90p per delivery for foils and publications. Seeds direct charge 65p but you can recoup that on a single packet given the price difference.

The only things I checked that are comparably priced are peas and broad beans.

  • Hi Ras

Nice job, Romans definitey cheaper on those you mention. Why dont you email SeedDirect with those examples, as they promise to give you a free pack of seeds if u can beat their price!

Will be interesting to hear what they say.

    Cheers

    Hi RAS
Can you elaborate? I've got access to a frost free and an unheated greenhouse but am a novice so don't know how to make the best use of them. I've got broad beans and peas on damp paper (from a tip from another forum) and plan to sow some Winter Gem lettuce and garlic tomorrow. What else can I be doing now?
