If you've got windows 2000 or later, look in the event viewer - it'll tell you if the hard disk has been complaining about getting unreliable.

Many people blame on their hard disk what are problems with windows.

That's as far as I've got, and then in System. There are lots of errors over the last couple of days which are either me (I guess) turning off or it shutting down automatically. Either Service Control Manager Event 7023 or System Error (102) Event 1003 but nothing further than that. Might see if either of those are listed errors if I google them.

I can't tell you how gutted I am starting to feel :( I've seen a neighbour across the road who doesn't have it and one next door neighbour who hasn't said anything so must not have it. The only other neighbour is on nights I think (coincidentally she works in a sorting office!) as her car arrived here around 9 and there is no answer when I knock. I know I'll be really upset if it has disappeared :(

They won't be them. They'll be something along the lines of "{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."

Or whinging about unable to write to a cluster. Whichever way it complains, there will be loads of them.

It just sounds like windows is doing its usual dying swan trick. Try re-installing the latest service pack - that should refresh all the dlls etc. Then you'll have to run through windows update to get all the hotfixes back.

Think I might go with chicken soup and chicken curry, with chicken sandwiches for lunch (yes, there's really that much!).

Okay......hair dye is now on my roots - 15 mins until I have to go and put the rest of the dye on the rest of my hair. I've a feeling it's going to be patchy, but I'm hoping patchy will look better than rooty? Got to look my best now I'm single! :o

I can be there in an hour or so for lunch. Anyone want a lift :D

Good luck with the dye, what colour you going?

Go here - http://support.microsoft.com/%2fsp and select the appropiate Windows. Then in the page it takes you to, there will be a link to download the latest service pack. Download it and install it.

Then once you've done the reboot-shuffle, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install the latest updates.

As always, make sure you have backed up everything you don't want to be reduced to a pile of cinders...

The St Bernard? Naah...slobber is more likely.

Installing a service pack shouldn't cause any real change to the configuration of your system, just recopy bits of windows that may have had bits fall off them.

A full format and reinstall is the real deal if you want that... ;)

Hurry up then Spud, there's a growing 8 year old eyeing it hungrily! :D

My hair is (hopefully) just going to be the same colour as last time (mid-blonde), just with less dark roots. It's all done now - I'm just waiting for it to dry so I can survey the damage.

It's updating now and I am still here.......famous last words.......it's also done some updates.........

I've done a full re-format a couple of times on an old machine I had 10 years ago. It wasn't as scary as it seemed and I guess if needed I could do it to this one. When it started playing up yesterday I chucked all my photos and teaching stuff on a stick - just in case. In a way, it's nice to have a lovely fresh computer to start again with, without all the rubbish that's been accumulating.
