I have a quick question. would being partially, well mostly blind qualify for AA? would a medical need to be done? also do you know if this would come in as lower or higher rate?

    Thank you very much

    Hi,

Well, as i am sure you are aware with AA there is no mobility component and no equivelant of DLA lower rate of care.

For that reason we look at the requirements for Middle rate or higher rate care under the DLA rules (which is the same as the AA awards).

Annoyingly, the main meal test, which you would have had a virtual certainty of meeting the criteria of does not apply in your case, but I would have assumed a certain amount of supervision and/or attention needs would be present, such as taking medication (assuming to cant see what medication is what), communication (an important one in your case for letters, etc etc), Help with social activities and so on.

Obviously, I cant give you a yes or no as to whether you would qualify or not based on the fact you are partially sighted, but what I can say is that many people do qualify, but its heavily dependent on how well you manage.

For example, if you can read braille (or large print), can find your way around in your own home and deal with most of your own activities of daily living there is less chance you would qualify as the needs you have would have to be frequent throught the entire day. However on the other hand, if you need help with most of these things, or help getting to the toilet a couple of times a night, there is every chance you will qualify.

I strongly suggest putting in a claim for and giving it a try ;)

I think it's very good of you to give so much of your time and makes the whole DLA thing less scarey. I have quite bad ME which has ruined my life but is not an easy thing to define on a form! However I'm very grateful for it , every little helps.
But if you could give me my health back then I'd swap that for the money any time! - :) Picturing you in a wee frilly ballet skirt & tights with a pink sparkley wand .... :)

    Hi Thanatos,

I have been reading this thread with interest as i have just but in a DLA claim for my 5 year old son who has suspected ASD and possibly Dyspraxia. I had someone from the CAB LPSA Benefits advice project come out and help me fill in his form. I just told her about what he was like every day did not do worst days or anything like that. I also sent his pead's report and his speech therapy action plan with his claim.
But have realised i forgot to put his child benefit number on the form. Can't believe i did that. Do you know if they contact me to get it (i did put my phone number on the form) or just refuse his form?

Thankyou for any advise you can give

Hi, makes no difference whatsoever ;) All kids get child benefit regardless of their circumstances so it bears no impact on DLA claims whatsoever.

(I am assuming here you mean his Child benefit number and not his National Insurance Number...)

Help with social activities and so on.
    Sorry Thanatos, me again.

With regard to social activities and DLA - could you give some clue as to what social activities you would be looking at?

I've had conflicting advice in this respect - I've been told by 1 person that being unable to socialise isn't taken into account with regard to mobility and/or care needs, but on another occasion that it is.

There are numerous things that I can't do anymore because I need someone with me to enable me to do them. I haven't been on holiday for 3 years because the person who used to take me is these days otherwise engaged and I can't get myself to any destination more than 30 minutes drive away. I also can't go to the cinema or swimming, can't cope with large groups, noise, flashing lights etc, on my own.

Are any of these things taken into account, or is it really a case of if you can get yourself out of bed at some point during the day and can bung a pizza in the oven, you're not really in any kind of need?

Thankyou for your reply. I was stressing abit. My son does not have a national insurance number yet as this is our first claim. I was told he would be given one if we were sucessful ( As this counts as his income).

    Thankyou again

i know the dla unit advise that the average is roughly 11 weeks, and if nothing is heard by week 8 to give them a ring - which in your case would be the 18th Nov. From my experience, mine took 14 weeks earlier this year - and it was a very nerve-racking 14 weeks! HTH
