I'm not sure whether I've posted this in the right place, but I have picked over 30lb of apples (inc windfalls) of apples (unsure of varieties apart from Russet) & conference pears. I am going to cook some, slice some and freeze them, ready for pies, crumbles etc. However, I would like to do something else with them as well but am a bit stuck, can they be made into chutneys - and has anyone tried them, how do they come out/taste like. Any help is much appreciated.0

Apple jelly is nice, but even better with a few raspberries/brambles/elderberries added (I use 250g soft fruit per 2kg apples, so you don't need many) for colour and a more interesting taste. Eating apples contain a lot less pectin than cookers though, so you'll need jam sugar or Certo for a good set. I use apple + soft fruit jelly as a fruit tea type drink so a good set is not essential.Val.0

Hi
As a starting point a lot of the apples you have picked would probably store for eating fresh over the next two or three months, instead of you having to turn them into frozen goods at risk to power cuts and preserves.
Conference and Egremont Russet will both certainly keep well until the end of November in a cool and damp environment. I would however keep the apples away fromn the pears becasue the gas they give off causes ripening in other fruit. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
So, I got a ton of pears from the market today for £1 but they were very ripe and on the way home may have got slightly squished... I now have 6 soft pears that need using. Any ideas?!
I also have an extreme apple glut from the tree I know there's another thread on that but if you have any new ideas I'm open to them!0 -
Pear & almond tart is lovely.
I put stewed pear in natural yogurt or porridge for breakfast.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
I make pear and almond cake or if OH nags enough pear and chocolate marble cake. I just add the pear to the vanilla part.
