These figures on how many kWh used per day are fairly meaningless unless the size of the property, insulation standards, temperature maintained and type of occupation(all day or out at work) are taken into account.

I suspect it uses more gas to keep Buckingham Palace at 24C than a bedsit at 16C!!

Agreed but do Derrick's figures sound right to you? see post #125

PS. Not in a bedsit. :D

    espresso,

I am not sure what Derrick is saying about his consumption other than his boiler can use 30kWh in the first hour.

I have 2 boilers. The biggest(Ideal Mexico CF125) has a maximum input of 46.1kW(157,300Btu/h) and the smaller combi(Worcester 9.24) has a maximum input of 30kW(102,400Btu/h)

Whilst I haven't checked, I am quite prepared to believe that the main house boiler could use 30kWh in the first hour if we came back to a very cold house with no hot water and put all the radiators on.

That said it would be a very unusual occurrence to use that much.

My typical daily consumption at this time of the year is 130kWh. Last year in the 4 months Nov to Feb it averaged 160kWh. - and we have an open log fire that is sometimes used.

If the average gas consumption in UK is 20,500kWh, I suspect over 50% of that is used in the 4 months from Nov to Feb. That gives an average daily consumption approaching 100kWh.

I find your figures hard to believe, as ours averaged 52.57 kWh per day over the last week, with the central heating on for 15 hours each day, which equates to only 3.5 kWh, less than a quarter of your figure!

Do you have the central heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening?

Mine seems to be using about 40khw+ per day, heating on for 3 hours per day currently. Seems a lot compared to your figure.

Yes far to many variables and not enough information given. I have never clocked our boilers consumption for the first hour but was a little surprised at his figures quoted:

If I put the heating on, the first hour uses nearly 1 therm,(measured on the IMPERIAL meter), that is 31 Kwhs, each subsequent hour uses ½ therm, 16Kwhs.

From what I have read, I think the '65 day rule'(payment at old tariff rates) only applies if you switch from BG to another company.

I don't think it applies if you switch from Click 5 to Click 6.

Not certain about that though, perhaps you should check?

Your probably right but I wasn't very clear. I am not planning on switching to Click 6 but moving to another provider.
  • I have a detatched house with radiators in 9 rooms (jncluding hall and landing). Our Worcester Combi uses about 1/2 a unit and hour or 16 Kwh when the Central heating is on. I am going to turn off the radiators in 4 rooms to see if it makes much difference.

Not sure what more info you want, or why you dispute my figures! I have no reason to lie.

    Baxi Bermuda 551 back boiler
    IMPERIAL gas meter
    3 bed semi detached house
    9 radiators
    gravity fed HW.

My consumption seems to be about the same as Woodgnome; -

There must be something wrong with mine. 4-5 radiators, on for about 3 hours per day. About 40kwh per day at the moment!

I'm going to write it down tonight and check next week, maybe I'm working it out wrong.

Not suggesting that anyone is lying, just questioning why your gas consumption is so different to mine. Your boiler is rated at 18kW similar to ours, 4 bed detached house with 10 radiators, yet yours seems to use 16 kWh compared to my 3.5 kWh. Must be down to efficiency of boiler, type of construction, amount of insulation, room temperature etc. etc. It just seems such a vast difference. Perhaps my meter is seizing up?

    espresso,
Is that 18kW the output or input?

I assume your house is modern and has high standards of insulation? as 18kW seems low for a 4 bed detached.(or perhaps I am out of touch)

The Combi I have is for an annex(a small detached converted Coach House) of approx 900 sq ft and that has an input of 30kW and a nominal output of 24kW, although I suppose a combi needs a higher rating to provide 'instant' hot water.
