  • 60 per day for us - mind it was a very cold week - hope to get back to around 40 this week as it seems a fair bit warmer today - this is for 4 people in a 4 bed semi

We're off the scale this week - averaging 100kwh a day. No, I don't mean 10 and yes, I do mean kwh.

    :D
    Back boilers for the win.

We're averaging about 9 units (100 kwh) a day when its frosty. Drops to about 5 when its abit warmer out. Nice and warm indoors though, the other plus is the boiler hasn't needed repairing once in 12 years (it must be 30+ years old). Unlike all my friends combi boilers, most of them are on their second boiler in that 12 year stretch.

Well over the last week we have used an average of 76.2 KWh per day. That's a frightening amount and I don't know what we can do to keep it lower. I already use it quite frugally. It is half term and I don't generally have the heating on in the day if the kids aren't here. Have to say though that I haven't turned it on or up either during the last week.
DH did turn it up the other evening cause it was cold but it wasn't for long.
I'll just fetch my clock and tell you all what my settings are, see if you all think it's ok?

Ok, have a Worcester digistat thingy which does the same for each day of the week.
    Setting 1, Temp to 17 degrees @ 07.30.
    Setting 2, Temp to 13 degrees @ 09.00.
    Setting 3, Temp to 17 degrees @ 15.30.
    Setting 4, Temp to 10 degrees @ 22.30.

TBH noone is ever up in our house at 07.30 so I might knock a little while off that and set it for 08.00. It's mayhem at that time in the morning so we keep warm by rushing around. I generally go to bed at around 08.45 when I've been on nights but I have had the odd morning where I've got into bed and I'm shaking violently cause it's so cold. I remedied this last Wednesday by wearing my fleece and satin dressing gown to bed and I was toasty!

DH gets very cold at night. He's fine usually when I'm at home in bed with him because I'm hot stuff ;) but if I'm not home I think he puts the heating up as he's too cold.
We only have a double bed and he's too tall for it so we will be getting a longer one when we can afford it. We will also get King sized. That will mean new bedding but I will reuse our old duvet as a mattress topper for added warmth. I will also be getting a nice thick proper goose down duvet. And a throw for the top of the bed. I'm reckoning on one of those hideously expensive quilted throws with padding because the blankets wreak havoc with my allergies and I end up feeling like carp & spending my gas money on antihistamines!
So I do have a plan but need to implement it thoroughly. Need to go mad with the insulation too so that the house stays warm. We have a dreadful single skin utility room at the back of the house. It sucks the heat out of the rest of the downstairs so need to find a workable way of making it better insulated (and less prone to condensation running down the walls!). Can only see us being able to do 2 walls though as 1 borders on next doors garden and will be overhanging their boundary if we do anything to it. Lots of lagging to go in the little loft bit though.
I have found that using the TD makes it warmer out there so figure that it is a necessary evil.
Finally, I apologise for my long (boring) rambling post but there you are!

Id say your gas useage is high considering the fairly low settings on your thermostat - do you have the loft insulated? Cavity wall insulated? I know it may sound daft but do you keep any windows open? Fraughts anywhere - ie letterbox etc? Old boiler?

Do you use gas for cooking with?

:hello: all. First post here - I like stats ;)

Just had my last gas bill so have stats for the last year now - currently using 7700kWh/yr but haven't been keeping track of daily usage although now heating is on it's obviously more than usual ;) Average of 21kWh over the year but from some past readings, worst case in winter is approx 2 gas units ~ 60kWh

As a benchmark for the circumstances:

2 bed link-semi (attached one side, garage the other)
10in loft insulation (mostly as some bits are panelled for storage)
Full cavity wall insulation done when I moved in
Using a rubbish old Myson boiler from when the house was built
Smallish DHW tank in between main bedroom and spare room

Thermostatic valves on all rads, set to just above 3
Programmable system thermostat set as follows:

    Weekdays:
    06.00 - 07.45 @ 20.5C
    07.45 - 16.30 @ 17.0C
    16.30 - 21.30 @ 20.5C
    21.30 - 06.00 @ 17.0C

    Weekends:
    07.30 - 21.30 @ 20.5C
    21.30 - 06.00 @ 17.0C

When it's cold I leave the boiler on 24hr and let the stat do the switching, otherwise it's on a 'all day' setting

So fairly happy with the set-up - I'm surprised how low people have their thermostats set - I guess it may be due to calibration but I can 'feel' when the heating should kick in based on my settings above. Still have a blanket on the duvet during winter though :D

I average 9-11kwh per day gas in the summer and anywhere up to 48kwh a day in the winter. I have a combi boiler, central heating and gas fire, gas hobs on the cooker. Everything else is electric. It's a 2 bed mid terrace.

You can get insulated plasterboard that you can fit inside this though is thick I cant remember but it has insulation glued on one side and plasterboard on the other might help you though if your utility is big enough to loose about 4" I think.
Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves
  • Calculated over the last two months for our 3 bed detached (2 adults - one of whom is a rather stingy with the heating):

Gas - 9.4 kwh per day
Elec - 5 kwh per day

I'm sure I can get that down over the winter months! I'll be buying the wife some more jumpers this Christmas...
