.....I don't know about you but I just don't know how the fixed term accounts are going to be sorted. When the fscs e mail arrives are some people just going to ignore it and leave it till the term ends in 1/2/3 years time with the hope of drawing the money out then? A bit risky if the account is still under the Icesave brand.
Well TBH after all the worry I don't see many people ignoring the issue nor do I see many who will be prepared to leave their savings with Icesave unless of course they amalgamate it within a UK bank or similar 100% safe place.

I find that one of the best ways of checking if an email is genuine is not to open but select properties then details then select message source, that way will give a more correct indication of where the message came from rather the possible bogus one displayed on the message itself.

Also check the grammar and spelling in the e-mail. Phishing e-mails I've seen usually have spelling mistakes or just don't read convincingly.
e.g Secure message: Your account is temporarily suspended
Suspension reason: Security Measures

Although it would cost more I'd rather see letters sent out by snail mail or e-mail with no links inviting us to login to our Icesave accounts, and do whatever needs doing from there.0 -

It's more likely that the email will simply tell people to visit the FSCS website (without providing a clickable link), and all the necessary "stuff" will be linked from there.
Never click an email link.Mmmm, credit crunch. Tasty.0 -
I have been a member of this forum since the start of 2008. I joined this forum a few weeks before depositing my funds in Icesave. This is NOT me complaining about advice received in this forum. Many individuals posting to this forum ( and the forum owners ) have advised to spread savings around. I did NOT take this advice and almost lost an inconceivable amount with Icesave. This IS me complaining about the doom-mongers and soothsayers who, to my mind, seem to take delight in the spreading of false rumours and general airing of their own ill-informed opinions. All Icesave customers have been rescued by our Government and we are now presented with a time table for the return of our "lost" monies. The bottom line here is this forum has become a source of worry for myself and. I`m pretty sure, for others. I for one am calling time on my use of this, once valued, resource.0

Yes I agree I have gone from being happy to deep despair after reading stuff here and sometimes I just leave it to ease the 'suffering', I am soon back for my 'fix' though because the trouble is I am hooked and addicted so can not leave! :eek:0 -

Thats the ideal thing they could put in the email. But as people are only expecting an email, phishers could send one out first with a clickable link and still appear genuine. However doing it all electronically and sending personal emails will help relieve uncertainty.
Were any details given about how the tax free status of the money will be kept, I understood it as you would keep it but if the linked account is a current account for instance what sort of procedure would you have to do to put it in an ISA, or have they not mentioned this?

Give them some credit - Icesave was a "virtual" bank i.e. the accounting was done by Newcastle Building Society (as they do for others such as B&B and First Save) and the money was handled by Landisbanki.
To use the services of Newcastle saves FSCS a lot of work (and the taxpayers and other banks money) - they don't need an army of people to collect, match etc. and payout the monies. They can effectively restart the Icesave accounting systems and take the place of Landisbanki on the money side. Clearly Newcastle will need to do some work on those transactions which may be in limbo - same as for ING with Kaupthing.
If the accounts are moved onto the books of the Newcastle Building Society - I would not have a problem with that.0 -
Every Icesave depositer should be thanking their lucky stars that they have been rescued by HMG, who, strictly speaking, only had to pick up the tab for deposits between about £16k and £50k.
It's also very reassuring that the repayment scheme has been triggered despite the collapse of negotiations with Icelandic authorities. I assume that HMG will carry the can then pursue the Icelandic Govt. in due course.
Good to see the announcement about process and timetable issued on a Saturday too. It looks as though FSCS people are pulling out the stops to make it all happen asap.
If fixed rate bonds can be allowed to run to maturity at the orignally contracted rate it is good news all round - especially with falling rates.
I know it's unfashonable, but perhaps some gratitude for the commitment and hard work that has gone into this rescue is due to those at the sharp end in the Treasury, FSCS and BoE.0 -
I for one are counting them stars. Its not over yet but fair play to the treasury,FSCS etc. I just hope that in future Iceland has to pay back this money. Its certainly a rollercaoster ride and i will wait untill the end to make up mind if Gordon Brown has infact earned any brownie points.0
