Try https://www.ravelry.com great for patterns you need to sign up but it's free. Also you can get stacks of help from people there.
https://www.knitty.com is another good site for free patterns.
Can't remember when I last bought a pattern.0 -
Here are my top recommendations:
1. http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/kategori_oversikt.php
2. http://www.berroco.com/pattern_library.html
3. Jessica Tromp's fantastic website will give you a pattern for any type of jumper or cardigan - whether it's for a man, woman, child or dog. You can even mix and match with her cables, fancy stitches and panels, fair isles, arans and other options if you want something different to stocking stitch.

4. If you want to knit a basic sweater (and choose from different styles of sleeve and neck), then put your measurements into the Knitting Fool site and it will generate the information you need in a simple pattern:

Also try the following. Subscribe for a newsletter about every two weeks. Links provided for free patterns (I too can't remember when I last bought a pattern), blog, podcasts, trims and edgings, discount knitting/ crochet kits, learn to knit/crochet instructions, knit-a-longs, etc. An American company but patterns are easy to follow. :T

Thanks to everyone for these great sites0

This is a wonderful find, thanks to all who submitted links as I love knitting. Sadly, the cost of balls of wool have outweighed the ready made jumpers now but if anyone has a cheap wool source, I'd love to know. knitting has recently been recommended for depression sufferers and also hyperactivity can be channelled with knitting.0

Try any local Poundshops or bargain shops. I think you will be surprised at how cheap some places sell wool.0

Knitting Daily (from Interweave press) also has some free patterns - you need to register but it's free. They also have some really useful posts about shaping, and techniques etc. There is also a pattern store but you can search just for the free ones.0
