Glasses Buying Cost Cutting Plan Article Discussion Area

  • I noticed someone asked if anyone wears the glasses they bought online all day.
The ones I got were from glasses2you and are brilliant. Ive paid ten times the price in the past for very similar frames in opticians shops over the years.

My family have also bought and had no probs, admitidly they were reading glasses but still pretty good quality. I think if you have a weakish prescription there is nothing to loose at the prices available.

Opticians do provide a great service but how can they justify the prices they charge especially to low earners like myself. So Im all for cheap online products!

Sorry to go on but we do get ripped off in this country!! What do you think?

Just to chip in, I used the free D&A voucher for an eye test and looked at some frames, FILA the assistant quoted me £207.50 inc thin polycarb lenses and coatings, a search on the web and I found similar style from thespectaclecase.co.uk for £45 + £2.50 delivery. Just had them delivered and if I have any problems with them they offer a 12 month no quibble return policy! At those prices I'll be ordering some sunglasses soon too.

When I was in HK last year there was an opticians that was everywhere but I forget the name. I would ask on the tripadvisor hk forums if I were you. There are plenty of locals that frequent the boards, plus regular travellers.

Thanks for your reply - I've only just managed to remember where I posted the question!

Hi, in response to you post. I have a very high prescription so I appreciate what you say about the cost of lenses etc.. Last year I purchased a pair of Rimless frames with a 1.6 high index lense from https://www.39dollarglasses.com these cost me just over £80 including postage, and they are absolute fantastic and there service was excellent, and if I hadn't been happy with them I could have returned them with problem.

It's definately worth giving them a try, even if they are just for a spare set of glasses
I ordered a pair of rimless reading prescription glasses. They had all the fancy coatings ect and are bendable. They cost somewhere in the region of $120 and they came out within 10 days to uk. when i got them i realised i had made a mistake on my order form (Got the prescription wrong). So these would have been of no use to me. I E-mailed them and they just said send them back at your cost along with new details and we will re-make new lenses and post them back to you at no extra cost. Got them again within 10 days. I am very happy with my new specs and the company great service.

My idea is to get your first pair of glasses from a high street opticians where you can have them fitted etc then get a spare pair from somewhere like glassesdirect - that's what I did and I keep them in the car for driving so I never forget them. The glasses from glassesdirect certaily seem to fit and 'work' as well as the ones from the opticians, I was really pleased with them.

If it's your first ever pair of specs then it is probably worth getting a decent fitting from a high st source - then once you are happy with them use those measurements, prescription and style to obtain further pairs from cheaper net suppliers.

They have a scheme on their website that if they are not able to send the order within 10 working days of your order they will give a free basic frame but if they do not update me on the already placed order. What guarantee is that they will respect the scheme.

I hope it is not a fraudulent company  .

Just got the brochure sent to me & tried a few frames and they seem fine a little lightweight but a reasonable choice of colours styles etc and the ones I tried fit well. I will order a spare pair which will cost £17.50 inc p&p well below the £70 D&A charged me recently. Only gripe is they have an 0870 number but good news is they have a few land lines try either 01666 829037/824508/829002.
