Thanks folks, really interesting to read the above, i think its a fascinating discussion. When I was writing the poll i was considering doing it the other way round ie. which one of these would you give up - if you only had to give up one - would the results have simply been reversed do you think or is it more subtle than that?

  • Well, you can live without all this stuff but now that we have been without a car for a few days I would say life is possible without it in the country but it seriously limits what you can do here. Public transport is just about okay but very expensive - nothing like it is in urban areas. A washing machine makes life much easier when you have a family. The internet is good for news/keeping in touch etc and becoming more and more necessary. The children use it all the time for school work/looking at paintings in art galleries etc - fantastic. I could go without a mobile - only use my PAYG occasionally and so the school can get hold of me if I am out. Would find it easy to give up TV - only have 4 channels and grainy reception anyway!

Probably the internet, closely followed by car.

    The internet because I can:

    watch TV on the internet,
ask to work from home because i didn't choose car,
er .... put my food in my water cooling system PC case, because I dont have a freezer? hmmm.
and .... arrange a laundry service home delivery using the internet, eliminating the need for a washing machine.....

I would give up the tv - so long as I had internet access and this site, that'd be enough entertainment for me. :)

The others are essentials for me, for work reasons if not personal.
  • In my case the car is the necessity :( I had to have one to get my job and can't do it without one. So as the job is a necessity to pay for the roof over our heads and food in our mouths it would have to be that.

Don't have a fridge freezer (they are seperate lol) but don't see how I could live without my fridge or my washing machine without becoming ill from exhaustion.

Although actually pre kids etc I have lived without all of the listed items perfectly well.
I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.

I'd keep my washing machine as I think it would be really hard work washing clothes using a mangle.
