Just got back from holiday in , where one of the entertainment people says thats they were booked by RBS for entertainment on a foreign staff jolly last year. They also booked girls aloud at £90,000 per night for 3 nights. Hopefully with taxpayers fotting the bill this extravagance may be nibbled back a bit.

RBS employ rather a lot of staff. They pay lots of tax too. Don't know the numbers, but I'd guess around 70,000 staff and I would hope they select around 1,000 to benefit from this sort of "jolly" each year.

Let's say they have a sneaky little "reward" event to say thanks to those staff they believe have given a little more to the cause that year.

They fly them to an out of season holiday resort, wine them, dine them, put on a band and genuinely lavish the hospitality. On people who earn, say, £15,000 a year. Treat them like they are really special for a couple of days.

Let's say they spend £1m all in on this. Probably works out at about £15 for every member of staff working for the company. That's around 30p a week. As it's a taxable perk, the Treasury also earn £400k out of the event.

If you believe that employers shouldn't thank their staff for hard work, and run incentive schemes to encourage innovation and results, then fine. Personally I think the idea of setting aside 30p a week per employee to reward the genuine hard workers in a firm (rather than introducing a new executive bonus scheme) is excellent.

We've just had all Xmas parties cancelled.

Big company. Can't name it, but it's a kick in the teeth for those of us still clinging to our jobs...

This typical teacher got up at 4.00am to complete marking a set of assessment papers, taught a full day 8.25 - 3.30, including seeing pupils for extra help during the lunch break and doing a morning break duty, then stayed on as it was not worth going home betwen 3:30 and 5:30 when parents evening starts; it always overruns at this time of year (anxious parents wanting to know if the kids will pass the 11+ in this borough). Got home at 9.45. Yes, its the hours which are the main perk of this job. I should have joined the army for the unrivalled waterskiing opportunities...
