RBS Investment Bank Christmas Party

Hi

I've just got an email from a friend who's been temping at the investment banking division of RBS/ABN for about four years. NEVER ever has she been invited to the staff Christmas party because she's a temp.

This year for the first time, she received an email telling her to save the date for the Christmas party on 27 November.

1. Do you think RBS investment bankers deserve a Christmas party at taxpayers' expense?
2. Isn't it a coincidence that the moment our [ie taxpayers' money] is being spent people who aren't normally invited are invited!

  • 1. What have your friend and her colleagues personally done to deserve losing one of their perks?
    2. Probably. Perhaps it was an oversight in previous years.

    1. Their downfall has been caused by exceptional market conditions and poor boardroom decisions. Why should the overwhelming majority of hard working staff lose out for this?
    2. No. It's probably a different person in HR who has made a different decision to previous years.

Most bank staff receive fairly poor salaries topped up by half decent perks and share schemes. Many have lost several thousand pounds in share options that they can ill afford - not as a consequence of their own actions.

That's sweet: someone who recognises that not all investment bankers earn lots of money...

It was never a 'perk'... because some years the investment banking division never had a party, ie during the bad times. It was only in the last two/three years they had one and temps were never invited.

Your friend should thank the EU. Temporary and part time staff now have the same rights as full time staff - discrimination like not inviting to official functions, not paying sick leave or holidays is no longer allowed.

I don't think she has sick leave or holidays!! I'll check!

I thought temps got paid more because they don't have perks such as these?!

    1. I echo others comments, it's only fair that the 'common' staff should have a party, it will certainly help their morals and thus their attitude towards the work and CS.

    2. Probably an oversight or as per other members suggestion, implementation of the new EU law.

Wouldn't it be relevant to tell us who actually pays for this Christmas party that intrigues you so much?

It's an open question... it's not intriguing. There was outrage when directors went on a jolly a few days after the bailout so I just wondered what people thought of taxpayers paying for a Christmas party for people who work in RBS's investment banking in general.

How temporary is this Temp ??

Sounds like she's been there longer than most of the Board !!!

P.S. The Investment Banks I worked in, always had Xmas Party's irrespective of "bad" or good times, and the Temps who worked there for months always came !!!
