I tell them I'm an expert in IT security. I've yet to see that not stop them in their tracks.

I never try to reason with them though by offering explanations as to why I don't need a product, just gives them more to argue about. Instead I just say I'm not interested, end of.

I'm amazed at the length of conversations some of you are having. Maybe I've just been lucky but the sell has never lasted more than 2 mins with me, usually it's more like 30 seconds.

RBS tried to sell me PPI when I activated my credit card.

After the first sentence of the script (which I recognised) I said 'I'm staff' and he stopped and said 'OK, card activated, thanks!'

I didn't think of that one. /me makes note.

If they question that..i just say, they like me to go my own way and be self sufficient, but if i ever need anything desperately they are there...

    That one is good

CARDS THAT DON'T NEED ACTIVATING TO BE ABLE TO USE (NOTE THE TERM "SAFE RECEIPT" INSTED) -

Barclaycard / Morgan Stanley / Goldfish

Thanks for the information, unfortunately my new Barclaycard that I got today most definitely had the phrase "Call now to activate card" - nothing about "safe receipt". I didn't try using it before activating because I wanted to do a balance transfer and so had to call anyway.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

My husband has just got his 1st credit card with Barclaycard (and also an additional one for me). We were about to call to activate the card but I found this thead and that god I did. My husband has been ill and is slowly on the road to recovery. His speech however hasn't fully recovered and he gets very nervous, jittery and stutters alot with people he doesn't know (confidence thing i suppose - although when he's stressed like this he slurs a bit too). I obviously cannot call as its in his name so was surprised by what I read. I suppose gone are the days where you could call a number, provide your passwords and thats it!

Thanks for letting me know this, I suppose now we will cancel the cards as I dont want him to gp through 10-15 minutes worth of hard sell.

No need to cancel just get him to start the call by explaining he is ill, only has a minute and does not want insurance, he also does not want to talk about the reasons for that. Make him a little script if necessary.

I hope that's not really your credit card number bill !

Very very doubtfull 1234 5678 think about it! Hee!
I usually try and use this one 'I have savings to cover the full credit limit' (it's true I do) ... but when I called Halifax they still recommend I take out payment protection because I have no life cover ... I am only just old enough to get credit I don't even want to think about life cover - I have no children either. I have tried being polite with these hard sellers but sometimes you just have to say 'look I don't want' I usually don't ring the activation number just the normal service number I find them less pushy!

i had to go thru it all with halifax on sat morning, 15mins i weas on the phone, kept saying no to everything and that i had adequate cover, the chap i spoke to was annoying me a bit especially when he said so your ok about being liable if your card is lost or stolen, i said i'd take my chances

They generally shut up at this point if you start quoting the credit agreement at them.

For example from my Santander Zero card agreement:

"If your Card is lost, stolen or misused by someone without your permission, you may have to pay up to £0 of any loss to us".

Yes, I'm perfectly happy to be liable for £0 of losses, why do you ask?
