permitted work

  • I thought it was quite simple and that you could do anything as Permitted Work providing you kept within the hours/earnings criteria and reported to the DWP what you were doing.

Having said that, if you are on IB for a bad back and you suddenly get Permitted Work as a weightlifter, I think they might find that a little suspect.

I would have thought making cards is work, whether or not she is making any money and would personally have thought that it would be perfectly acceptable to the DWP. She does have to report it to the DWP because they are interested in the work as well as the money.

I would also assume that if you are on Income Support as well as the sickness/disability benefits, that any income over £10 would be deducted from the IS (but not from IB or DLA).

Think this is accurate but if not hopefully someone will correct me.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • You have to report any permitted work, even if you don't make any money, (incidentally the defininition of fraud has changed and no longer requires you to make a profit from the act).
The best thing to do is get indepandant benefits advice from another agency before you talk to the benefits agency so you don't shoot yourself in the foot, Dial is a good first port of call and should be able to point you in the right direction if they dont operate in your area.

Personally I would try and get such an agency to support you by writing the letters to the job centre plus for you. You should keep good records of all incomings and outgoings and technically the tax man will want to know about it too (so he can decide its not worth his trouble).

The thing is, OP's gf is running a website for selling her cards. The internet is a big place and eventually it is likely that someone who knows her will realise what she is doing. If that person reports her to the DWP there will be an investigation, and even though she is not making any money from it at the present time, an investigation would be stressful and upsetting.

Far better, in my view, to pre-empt anything like that and register for permitted work.

After all, that is what Permitted Work is all about - doing work that you are allowed to do, officially.

It is my intention to do some work from home when I am well enough, it will come within the permitted work rules, and I will certainly speak to both IB and DLA before I start doing any work, to make sure there is no problem with it.

I do know they changed the rules after the Theraputic Earnings was abolished by David Blunkett. Many had to give up their part time work esp those with progressive illnesses like MS, Parkinsons etc. They have allowed those with some of these type of illness to work agian but personally check with them. they are very very picky and may turn round and say she is working......

As I understand it, because IB is only paid if you are "unfit to work", you should report to them any earnings AND any work done, whether you get paid or not. So charity work has to be declared, as they might use it to say you are capable of working.

Who do you report permitted work to? I've been trying to inform someone that I am being paid to take part in a medical trial, and I can't find anyone willing to take ownership - they tell me I don't have to report it. Who should I be talking to?

You need to speak to your local Job Centre Plus - ask to speak to a disability officer

Thats if they know what one is, I did this today and my local JCP said 'what is one of those?'
  • Likewise, they do not have anyone who specialises in disability issues. They told me I don't have to report it to them, as I'm not actually "working" for the money. They suggested DWP, who didn't know what to do, either. Both suggested the other's websites - which are no help at all. If one of them was prepared to say something in writing that would cover my back as having tried to report it, I'd let it rest!

Thats great that is, what I did yesterday was wrong I guess but I don't care. I just want the oppurtunity to do what I want to do. Therefore the advisor who I spoke to seemed to suggest it wasn't a problem doing what I wanted to do. I then got her to repeat what she said along with giving me her name and the place where she works. In the process I recorded what she said (naughty I know but this has taken over a week of farting about trying to get the right advice)

Now, are they trying to make the system tighter simply because their own advisors do not know how to advise? If so its no wonder people haven't a clue and probably are claiming something they shouldn't. UNBELIEVABLE!
