Intel, from reading the kerio homepage, there is still an entirely free version, the download is actually the 'bought' version which after 30 days, if you don't buy, then automatically reverts to the free version. This only means that certain features are no longer accessible, but the free firewall still works as competently as if you had bought it, but minus blocking pop-ups and some other elements which don't affect the firewall capability. Like all firewalls, the free and bought versions are the same, what you actually buy are extras.0

All I'm saying is that there have been instances in the past where a virus will attempt to switch off both antivirus and firewall (as the virus in the BBC article did). Once these kind of viruses are out 'in the wild', you will normally find all decent security software companies will work out a way of stopping the virus affecting their product and either issue an updated version, or a patch. If you don't take these updated versions, you will leave your computer open with a known vulnerability. With any security software, it is always advisable to have them kept as up to date as possible. This does not only affect AV programs. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

OK Rex, I know and appreciate what you are saying but what you are still talking about is an AV concern, and nothing to do with firewalls. I agree entirely that updating is normally essential, but if both you and I can see that, then you'd think firewall producers would be savvy enough to be concerned as well and have a facility in their programmes to update, other than to purchase their product, but they don't. Every spyware and AV prog has that, but not firewalls. That's because they don't need to be updated, except in exceptional circumstances.0

Thanks for putting me right on this. I was concerned that I would have to find a new firewall. BUT, for some time I have been considering outing Sygate, because of the annoying boxes that continually pop=up, advising that something or another has been prevented from accessing the internet. (I don't mind the Port Scan attack ones, as it shows it is doing the job). The most common one is Win.kernel32 and these happen even though I have ticked the box, saying do not show this message again. Not only that, but while the box is displaying, it prevents you from doing anything on the computer. Only a few aseconds, but damn annoying. Having said that, Sygate has done an excellent job as a firewall. Have never had any unwanted guests etc. Might try the updated version of ZA though, although that means I will lose Sygate I expect."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -
