I can only say that you mucked up somewhere along the line when you set it up. I've been using both versions (free and Pro) for years. Both have been a joy to use and I haven't come accross a single problem with either version (except the most recent release (6), and that's been fixed now), and like I said. Zonealarm has been a respected firewall (in many places) for years now.
I use five email addresses myself on this computer, plus what the rest of the familty have. Zonealarm has never stopped any emails getting through on any address (this is on different email clients as well). I would say it was the way you set it up rather than a problem with Zonealarm. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Glad you have got used to Sygate, as I had. You will be pleased to know that Sygate is no more and all their Personal Firewall Products are discontinued from 30th Novemebr (taken over by Symantec). We need a good alternative I think."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -

Er no I dont need an alternative, as Sygate is relevant its just that it isnt
downloadable anymore but if already downloaded and registered it works fine.

I think someone mentioned that firewalls don't need updating. This isn't entirely true. Over time, hackers, spyware and virus writers find ways around versions of firewalls. Viruses in the past have been known to switch off antivirus and firewall programs. This is why you get patches and new versions coming out for both these type of programs. Once a vulnerability has been found (and it does happen), the antivirus or firewall company will either issue a patch or a new version to close the problem. If a program is not being updated anymore, it could leave it open to attack from any new viruses that have discovered a weakness in an old version of security software. The only way of making sure that you keep up with new viruses is by having a product that is kept up to date by the company.
For this reason, I wouldn't recommend using old versions of Sygate anymore. Better to use a product that will be updated as new types of attack are discovered. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I doubt that very much, firewalls would have an inbuilt and necessary ability to update (as AV or spyware programmes) if that was the case, but they don't, they usually only have an option to buy the professional version. "A firewall vulnerability is defined as an error made during firewall design, implementation, or configuration, that can be exploited to attack the trusted network that the firewall is supposed to protect."

If the programme meets that criteria, there's no problem and no need for an update, hence firewalls don't that option.
I think what you describe is more an AV problem.0 -
The arrows went back to blue when I clicked on them and the security log said there had been a port scan, severity minor.
