We suspect that ultimately they may have to pay the bill and forget about it - but it rankles!
Didn't know about the premium rate blocker that you can get with BT, may look into that for them - though, as many of you have pointed out, broadband is the answer to this sort of thing really.
We suggested this on numerous occasions but I'm always surprised by how many people I know are keen to stick with dial-up. Why? Particularly as many of them are not even on cheap dial-up connections either.

I assume that you have removed all traces of the dialler program using Hijack this, google for help reading the logs, tidied up with Ccleaner and have Spyware blaster etc. installed.

My OH knows a think or two about computers but we live over 200 miles away from his parents so there's not much we can do. I think their computer with the rogue dialler had a terminal breakdown actually, and they have replaced it now and are getting broadband, finally.

Dont forget to check for dialers in Add/Remove programs and see if any
programs that you didnt authorise are in there and remove them Be Sure You
Want to Remove Stuff.
Also if on dial up Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab
and remove any connections that you dont use/arent yours.0 -
I think that BT are complicit in the fraud by allowing it to continue. They are well aware of this and continue to do nothing. It is disgraceful behaviour. I just wish I could get a line rental through somebody else. Good luck!0

Well you can hardly blame BT they are just a company who are in the business
of making money, its down to the PC user to wise up and stop blaming everyone else
as rogue dialers have now an acceptance button nowadays, a while back they used to install no matter what, but not theese days you have to click Yes.
Its been on TV Radio and Internet and Newspapers, if people dont educate
themselves about theses issues they shouldnt be on the net.
Or at least seek advice at a college night school course or read up.0 -

One or two might to try to offer some level of acceptability but rogue dialers in general are loaded without the users knowledge.0 -

You can. There's no shortage of other providers willing to provide you line rental (OneTel, TalkTalk etc etc etc). However, they don't have significant market power therefore are not compelled to provide access to 1899 etc. You pay your money to take your choice, but I think you'll find the competitors even more hard hearted when something like this happens.GeoThermal wrote:One or two might to try to offer some level of acceptability but rogue dialers in general are loaded without the users knowledge.
Certainly true. However, it's pretty widely accepted wisdom in the industry that 70%+ of rogue diallers can be traced back to dodgy sites in the first place (by volume, the majority come from either !!!!!! or illegal MP3 download sites). Of course, I'm sure the OP's parents, plus any other MSEer caught by the fraudsters, fall into the 30%- category....I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -

Not exactly true nowadays as there is more regulation, the main thing is
to stop dowloading tripe and stay away from so called free !!!!!!.0 -
There is no regulation of rogue dialers, viruses, trojans etc. The people that create them are not ethical businesses and do not conform to rules and regulations. There might be more being done to detect them with software or to catch the writers but that is a different thing entirely.0
