Ooh crikey! The thought of the inlaws surfing !!!!!!! :snow_laug
Thanks for your replies. I appreciate the fact that we're closing stable door after the horse is long gone.
Though it irritates me that people who are not particularly tech savvy are being done over this way!
LittleJo - I would be interested in anything else you can dig up from the article. Other half has heard of this case and was trying to find out what the outcome was today but we couldn't find any info as to how it turned out.

    Hi,
OK, concerns about libel: forget it.
I am not, within the meaning of the Defamation Act of 1952 making any statement that is not in the public domain. Thus am not answerable in law.
I am making enquiries as to the findings of the courts and will keep you advised.

OK, I'm not a lawyer, so won't get sucked into a debate on this. However, you said

Had you said "The author believed that this made them an accessory..." then I'd totally agree that you were saying nothing that wasn't already public domain. However, the point I made was that you omitted the first bit, hence were effectively making what pupported to be a statement of fact that they were an accessory - on which you're on dodgy ground.

Put in a complaint to ICSTIS . They are the regulator for premium numbers. When this happened to my neighbour, she put in a complaint and they made BT freeze the disputed part of the phone bill. She only paid for her normal calls. These people are really the only ones that can deal with these premium rate scams.

Two neighbours of mine did the same thing. Froze the disputed part of the bill, paid the normal call charges.

I would certainly recommend you follow Rex_Mundi's link and sort it out so it doesn't cost you parent too much money.

    Hi,
Bunking- off, you are quite right, I was sloppy in my grammatical construction.

  • Years ago I got caught out with this, luckily my bill was only for £60 in these charges, I did go through the whole lodging a complaint with ICTIS and nothing ever came of it unfortunately. I just paid up and moved on. £900 is a lot of money, the people who do this are absolute scum
  • if you go to the ictis website there is a page where you can check the registered hirer of the line(that is if ictis are already investigating). i would contact them by registered post and ask for your money back. you may have to send photocopies of the bill etc but keep on at them, i know it has worked for some, not me though unfortunately....

If ICTIS can't help, you could try your Citizens Advice Bureau. I know of someone who didn't have to pay a substantial bill (few hundred pounds) after CAB negotiated.

As I say, it's somewhat bolting the stable door when the horse is long gone for the OP, but if anyone is still on dialup, please protect yourself by downloading BT's modem protection software from http://www2.bt.com/static/i/btretail/consumer/btprivacyonline/index.html .

Also, if anyone is using broadband but continues to have a phone connection to use their PC as a fax, I'd advise doing the same : a colleague of mine uses broadband and was still hit with a dialler fraud via their fax connection.
