What are they drilling and hammering.
For two years it sounds a lot of work.
Are they reasonable neighbours that you can ask to keep quiet at night.
One of our previous neighbours was a keen home builder, to be honest he just didn't realise what time it was normally, we had a chat will him and he agreed to keep quiet after 8pm (we had kids too), and his wife used to keep him in check after that.
If they are neighbours from hell get environmental out, and monitor the noise and times.0 -

Absolutely, the best thing to do (assuming you haven't already) is to speak with the neighbours and explain the situation. You never know, they may well be sympathetic and compromise with you.0 -
They are totally unreasonable and don't care - in fact they laugh about it and start shouting and whooping. We also have other issues such as their kids climb on our back fence and stare into our dining room while we are eating. so now we have to eat with the curtains shut. They also go into the front garden and stare in to our sitting room. We have no privacy and I just want to get away from them. I have also wondered how they could possibly still be hammering after 2 years - i have no idea what they are doing.0

Report them to environmental, and possibly building control as well, tell them you think they're altering the house without permission.0

They probably are because they started to build a huge porch on the front of their house but they have left it half built. I think one of my other neighbours must have reported them - everyone has had enough of them.0

My mum rented a house for a short time off a family friend and was warned the neighbours did a lot of DIY, the whole time she was there they drilled and hammered every evening Mon - Fri and all day on Sat and Sun, at this point they had been doing that for 5 years, we asked the same what could they possible be doing but they weren't very 'neighbourly' as in didn't talk or say hello to anyone, but having read your story at least they weren't rude or actively causing grief.
Good luck with getting help to move your neighbours sound ghastly.0 -
sound like my old neighbours. They used to scream and shout at early hours in the morning.
Anyway have you spoken to your landlord about it. He may have other properties nearby that are suitable that you could just jump straight into and transfer your deposit to it.0 -
Noise is a sod. I am on the spectrum and have massive noise intolerances. I was kept awake last night as my upstairs neighbour came home at 2.40am with a friend and was clomping about on her laminate floor (think two giggling early 20s drunken girls directly over your head in high heels).... autistic ... noisy
Drove me to distraction. I had to go outside in the street. I'll admit I cried. The noise died down after half an hour, but there was "some noise" after that for a total of 2 hours. This morning I am wrecked and distressed.
What people don't appreciate with ASD is that not only does the initial noise disturb and distress, but I find I am jumpy/anxious/alert/twitchy and can't settle for up to 2 hours after it stops. If I'd had to go to work this morning I'd have either been a danger on the roads or a mess at work.
So I can understand why it is important for you to move. Noise can be a major issue with this spectrum of disorders.
Good luck.0 -

We did not pay a deposit to our landlord as we owned the house before. We sold it to him and continued to live here. So we have no deposit at all.0 -
PasturesNew
I can understand what you went through last night. My daughter suffers from anxieties so when she is woken up she has the same problem as you and she cannot calm down again. I often have to sit with her for hours to calm her down - however it is usually me who ends up in tears. My neighbours sometimes have friends round and they scream and shout at the top of their voices until 3am. It's good to know I'm not alone0
