  • yep new home hell, ive found the exact fitting here - item 6603 06

what a muppet developer, putting these stupid things in, may get a quote for a rewire cus they are just plain cak :(

hehe - even though I have moved here nearly 2 years - there are still houses with no shades on in the rear rooms and living rooms. So easy to replace if you know what your doing for 5-10 min work :)

You'll be pleased to know that some time in the near future John Lewis will be requiring lamp shade suppliers to supply shades that will fit these energy saving fittings (as required in new building regulations) as well as regular fittings by way of a small adaptor fitted to the shade. This will not affect the price.

really? i'll be first at the door of John Lewis :j , that is if I havent been blinded by a daft light with no shade
  • Hi!

I've just moved into house with this type of fitting and I have been browsing Google to find some shades to fit.

I came across this thread which I see is almost two years old now.

Can anyone tell me if the situation has changed and if there are now shades available that will fit these bloody things?

I will be very grateful for any replies.

  • These type of low energy fittings have to be fitted in new build properties as part of regulations, they have to fitted in at least 2 locations if my memory is correct, also it costs the builders more to fit them but they have no choice!
  • Except for being ugly and not being able to get shades to fit, I think these fittings are much better than the standard size.

The push fit seems secure and very easy to use , once you realise how it works and the thread for the collar to hold the imagined shades on is much more practical than the thread of the standard fitting.

Why on earth has the thread have to be so tight and so long, almost impossible to use without cross-threading??????????????

One of the mysteries of life!!;)

  • awful things these are, speaking to next door about this sometime ago (after my post above in 2006 IIRC) they also replaced theirs to the 'normal' fittings

And get some 39p Energy saving blubs from morrisons and your sorted ;) - cheaper and moneysaving in everyway... just that you need to buy the wire and connector and cost of sparky (5min job)
  • Hi
I have the problem with these dam fittings aswell in my new build.I replaced them with a standard pendant from B&Q only a couple of quid dont take the whole fitting down just swap the flex from a standard fitting its much easier only 2 wires to change make sure you flick the main switch first i am sure you know that but like to be safe ,I also find it cheaper to buy the whole pendant fitting and put the old flex back on this fitting then you could flog on a carboot if you wanted to or have pleasure in smashing the thing up!!!
    good luck.
    John.

I moved into a new build last year, and only managed to get some shade for my bedroom.

I managed to get a basic shade, which the the circle bit is detachable from the shade itself. sawed the circle bit, and put it around the top wire, and now sits on the blocky section. its great.

got the shade from Asda. PM if you wanna see pics, as I dont know how to upload onto here
  • My sister-in-law reckons that Laura Ashley sell shades that have two rings on, one for each fitting and obviously the smaller one must be removable.

I haven't been able to confirm this yet.

  • Apparently IKEA sell lamp shades to fit these bulbs, not a huge selection. but better then nothing
