Options
Does anybody have those god awful energy saving light bulbs for their ceiling lights (like on the landing and hall?). Where on earth can you find light shades to fit the damn things? They are not bayonet or screw cap fixtures and seem to have a chuncky base no no tradional shades fit them

I know what you mean, we never did find decent shades for the lounge or dining room for the long thin type energy saving bulbs.

I ended up getting the shorter corkscrew type bulbs for the lounge/dining room as they fitted the existing shades ok.

  • hmmm, I have seen the smaller "corkscrew" bulbs, its not really the length of the bulb its the shape of the base of the fitment i.e. a square block and the bulbs "click into". Traditonal shades are just not designed for square bases!
Grumbler, that ceiling lamp looks the ticket, id have to check it out because energy saving bulbs do come with bayonet/screw fixings but these bulbs are neither of those but rather like this

The "base" that these bulbs plug into is an even bigger square block! So this is why its impossible to find a shade for the stupid things grrrr

Ah yes non retrofit lamps. They are always fun. It is very difficult to find a shade to fit them, when I worked at john Lewis a few years ago I cant remember anything that we had that would cover them but I dont know what they are doing now. The whole idea of those bulbs is so that when it blows you dont just go and stick in a normal bulb.

But I have seen some bulbs that builders have put in that they buy from Europe on the cheap and you cant find them in this country.

I cant really say where to go but I would imagine that someone out there is making shades for that type of bulb, hope you find something.

  • I gather you have a permissions house? - as mine had this stupid system (aquare base) in the living room and rear bedroom. This resorted me to rewire them as no shade will fit them and install energy bulds from the BOGOF promo from morrisons.
  • yep new home hell, ive found the exact fitting here - item 6603 06

what a muppet developer, putting these stupid things in, may get a quote for a rewire cus they are just plain cak :(
  • You'll be pleased to know that some time in the near future John Lewis will be requiring lamp shade suppliers to supply shades that will fit these energy saving fittings (as required in new building regulations) as well as regular fittings by way of a small adaptor fitted to the shade. This will not affect the price.
  • i have a new bellway home in ipswich and had these poxy lights in the bedrooms, went to b&q and brought some normal lights and replaced them, cost about £10 and took 20mins, a lot easier, plus the bulbs cost a fotune when they go.
