i know, it does seem long winded doesnt it, especially as they are not quick at processing the account openings, i applied to open it on 14th october, sent the cheque and forms they to you which i posted back on the 18th, and nothing heard since!

Seem to be at the next stage of setting this account up, winner of the most long drawn out account setup ever? Can't say I'm impressed...

Now I've received my registration code, (posted the signed form 6 days ago, this was a separate form sent after their receive and cash your opening cheque) so can now we can set-up internet banking great... almost there.

(You did all remember your customer number didn't you - if not, you'll need to go through a reminder process, no letter has the customer number, nor reminder in it.)

If you go to transfer more money in, it will ask for an authorisation and a DD mandate to be printed signed and returned, with the information it takes 22 days to set-up, groan...

Luckily it appears, you don't need to set this up to pay in more funds, you can just push money into the account via BACS, but I couldn't find this info anywhere on the screen, had to call to clarify - it may help someone here.

However when you want to move money out you'll need a card and card read to set-up the payments on-line, and ordering that takes at least 15-days, so do it in advance!

Easily the most convoluted, complex and paper heavy internet account I've ever set-up. Bad show Tesco

It's not too bad if you've lost the customer number, mine only appeared once when I registered online, and was never sent to me by any other means.

It doesn't appear on any paperwork, but is generated when you first register for on-line banking (I think just before you print an online form off to sign and return.)

The customer number is your DoB + up to 4 additional numbers, but you can say you don't have it when you registered the next step and it'll generate it again, make sure you write it down though!

Just quickly looking through my notes, this is the time taken so far during October:

6 days from setting up on-line to receiving confirmation and then returning my opening cheque / app forms.

a further 9 days to wait before receiving account details and opening confirmation, and then had to return a signature.

a further 6 days to receive on-line login details and setup "internet banking".

(21 days so far, from opening on-line to being able to access the basic on-line banking.)

    Now awaiting the card reader...

Thanks isofa you probably don't realise how much you are helping us just behind you in the whole ridiculous process.

As I did not notice the customer number I can give some more detail on how to retrieve this.

I received my registration code in the post today. This arrived only a few days after I returned the letter generated by the registration process. You need this registration code before you can retrieve the customer number so wait for this first.

    To retrieve the customer number:

    1. Log on to Accounts and Policies on the Teco website.
    2. You are asked for your customer number but can click on a help box if you have forgotten it, which you do.
    3. You then have to sign up to some terms and conditions (nothing is simple with Tescos)
    4. You then have to enter your sort code, account number and digits from your 4 digit pin. The sort code and account number are on the second Tesco letter asking you to register for internet banking. The pin code is the one you chose at the very start of the whole application process (hopefully you have this).
    4. You are then given your customer number the first 6 of which are your date of birth.

In terms of meeting the conditions for getting the Tesco clubcard points then to meet the first condition you have to have opened your account by 12 November. The letter from Tesco asking you to register tells you your account is open (although you cannot access it) so as long as you get this by 12 November you must surely meet this condition. Although nothing can be taken for granted with Tesco. Obviously the second condition is you have to get cleared money into your account by 30 November - how to do this has been covered by isofa.

No problem, you are welcome - I've never been through such a crazy process before.

I've heard that the card/readers can take ages to come through, but you only really need these to withdraw/pay money out (not in).

If you need a DD set-up do it now, the 22 days will take you almost up to the bonus balance cut-off.

Will keep you up to date when the next time arrives!

I've now accessed the account via my customer number.

Once you have done this you can order a card reader (and card) on line without any difficulty. The message comes up that it will be with you in the next 15 days.

One really useful thing about this Tesco account is that it is part of the Faster Payments scheme (i.e. same day transfers, subject to some conditions, from banks also in the Faster payments scheme at no cost, so avoiding the 3 days BACS timescales).

To check if the bank from which you are moving money from is signed up to Faster Payments go to www.fastpayments.co.uk and click on repository links. There is a list of banks and you can click on your bank if it is in the scheme and it takes you to your own bank's website information on Faster Payments. There are conditions and limits on transfers so do read your bank's info. There is info from the Tesco side of things also when you log into your Tesco account.

Thought I would check this out by making a small test payment from my bank (which is part of the Faster Payments scheme). Have just rung my bank to do this, walked the 5 metres back to my computer and amazingly the money was already there in my Tesco account! Normally occurs within 2-4 hours.

Marvellous. Perhaps all this effort is going to be worthwhile. When I get the card reader can move the main balance in. And a planned trip to the wild animal park with my tesco clubcard points next year!

  • Got the first batch of paper work through, including an R85 form which I requested. There is, of course an empty space for my account number, which I don't have yet, but the letter says I'm meant to send all the forms back in one go.

Do I just sign the R85 and leave it blank for them to fill in when they get round to opening the account, or wait until I have an account number and then send it? Any experience anyone?
