Utilities, broadband, tv, etc....

.......has anyone had any problems getting this stuff once they have been delcared BR? I ask because I am hoping to move into a house with my girls, and will need to set all of these things up. I will be starting from scratch as H will be staying in this house.

I was going through the Virgin website and it says they do a credit check

So any advice please? Ta x

  • Hi Merry, not sure about the home broadband but 3g do a `mobile / pay as you go` option & I think you just buy the `toggle` thingy & buy 30 days at a time (limitations on downloads) but at least it get you access without checks.

Cant help on TV/sky etc Im afraid.

  • Thanks Angel. Maybe I'll have to offer to pay a chunk up front?

  • The only experience i have is changing ISP's after BR.
It was soo easy going from AOL to O2. No credit checks and the best broadband service. I should have done it ages ago.

  • Really? Do you think it will be a problem that I am not changing, but starting from scratch?

I think it depends on which ISP you go with.
If O2 had credit checked me, i'd have failed (of course:rolleyes: ) so i'm guessing that they don't.
Maybe its just best to try ALL of them and see who accepts you.
If it helps, i went through quidco (google it) and got £25 back for changing ISPs. :j

  • i moved am onth before BR, so got all that sorted then, and am now merely changing the bank account they draw the DD from..

(underhand, aye, illegal i dont think so)

be warned if your new to virgin, they hit you with 30 plus 15 installation and delivery charge for the gear,

!!!!!!s just did me with it, not what i need the day after me BR, a nice 51 quid bill dropping on the mat..
  • Thanks PS. Unfortunately I don't have a choice. We did move before going BR, but now H and I have split up I need to find somewhere for me and my girls, which means starting afresh. Guess I better get ready to take a hit....

I have CCJs but no BR yet, and I have had big problems with utilities. BUT - there are ways around it.

If you can get cash together for deposits / upfront payments, then providers might take you. If not, you can get pay as you go phones, 3 Mobile do PAYG internet (it's not really good broadband speeds and there are download limits, so no streaming movies, but it's OK for basic stuff) and the sector is moving fast so better ones might come out soon.

Utilites like electricity and water shouldn't be a problem - there are laws covering essentials.

TV - I have no sympathy with that - get a freeview box from Argos and do without Sky and Cable rubbish!!

theres MUST be some that dont,

when i foned virgin today, they did say on the intro message, that "if you do not want a credit check performing, please lt the operator know"
