According to a post on another thread, there is supposed to be a statement on the Icesave web site this afternoon. The content and time of publishing is anyones guess.

Maybe a naive question but if the UK have seized/frozen Icelandic banks' assets in the UK, and Iceland are saying that they don't think they can finance a compensation payout via the passport scheme, why can't the frozen assets be used to repay UK investors, with any change being returned to Iceland?

I don't think it's as easy as all that, unfortunately. Because the UK gov't seized the assets under the Terrorism Act laws I think they have to release it after 28 days as obviously Iceland haven't actually performed an act of terrorism against us ...... yet! :D

As far as i can see, Haarde needs some cash from somewhere soon, or hes gonna be swinging from a lamp post, courtesy of his own people.]

I am not being flippant or sensational, but honestly believe, that if this matter drags on too long, it's quite possible that emotionally vulnerable depositors, in desperate need of their Icesave cash, may be found swinging.

It is often only condemnation from a coroner that actually "gets things done", such as getting proper equipment for our troops abroad. Lets all hope that this matter gets the action and publicity it deserves without the need of tragic inquests.

    They should hurry up!

By the time people get compensation interest rates will be at 1%, and pound exchange value collapsed!

That statement is patently untrue. See here.

  • I've seen posts by Icelanders elsewhere on British newspaper sites going on about how downtrodden they are and then blaming it all on Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown. Obviously the government of Icelands PR machine is working overtime there to spin it that our government is to blame for their sorry mess. Yet it was their incompetence with nationalising Glitner which helped create this mess.

Im trying to remain positive and be patient but am starting to miss the £150 a month interest and not having access to my hard earned money.

Hopefully these 'talks' dont keep going round and round in circles. Pardon my ignorance but they have been talking for hundreds of hours now, what exactly have they been discussing all this time. Why does it take so long to come to a flipping decision!?
