  • They 'helpfully' don't mention broadband (ADSL) in their FAQ at all. Probably don't allow us poor people to access such luxuries at reduced prices, as who'd need that? ;-)
£4.50 + £7.50 = £12PCM for a BT phone line and O2 broadband? Virgin Media might just have to take their Indian call centre, script-reading tech support and over-subscribed services back then...

You are allowed broadband with this social tariff line.

    SwissToni,

Again, no explanation of why a 70% saving is "a BT con" or "sleight of hand that preys on the poor." Please explain such ridiculous assertions.

And £750 per month (after housing is paid) is not sweet FA. It is rich. If you are so wealthy that you regard an income of £750 per month as 'far from rich' then take money out of your own pocket and support your family yourself.

Apologies to everyone for straying OT but I'd like to know what Kim is referring to with the figures she mentions above.

Also in an earlier post she states:
A family of four with more than £800 per month after housing costs is rich (or at least not poor) in both absolute and relative terms, regardless of what the campaigning special interest groups say.
Can you please explain where you get these figures from Kim?
“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”

This site is about legal moneysaving. Outside of the Discussion boards, if it's legal and genuine, it's moneysaving. Sadly this thread is turning into an argument about the merits of whether those on benefits should be offered this deal. The fact is, they are.

BT are offering this as a completely above the board discount and therefore this thread is no place for people to criticise those on benefits. Please disist and keep this thread relevent, else we may be forced to start removing posting privileges. Remember this is a private site, it is not a free speech forum.

ADSL definitely does not exclude you from eligibility (see subpart 3 in http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/Public/current/Cust_Opts_Res_boo/FrameworkImpl55289.htm#FrameworkImpl55289) - whether this is both Ipstream (i.e. via BT wholesale and any ISP) and LLU ADSL is another question.

    http://www.btplc.com/News/Articles/Showarticle.cfm?ArticleID=195eaa52-9127-4eca-91c9-a1c0db252ca2
does say "broadband from any ISP of your choice" - so the implication is LLU ADSL is allowed.

Having already tried to apply for this package yesterday but told categorically by BT staff I was NOT entitled because I had Broadband from another supplier, I read the post from Graham1 with interest.
I therefore rang BT again today to quote them their own press release when they eventually agreed I AM entitled after all.
It would appear the vast majority of BT staff haven't been properly briefed on this new package and many are wrongly applying the same criteria as their earlier 'Social' packages. Similar to some earlier posts, I was also told the correct number to apply for this package is 0800 800 864 and NOT the one they state on their & MSE's website.
With this being my first post, I hope it might encourage others previously denied by BT for having BB to reapply!

    Hello

Found this on a bulletin I receive from work.

    Caterina

BT has recently launched a new social tariff, BT Basic,
aimed at cutting the costs for those on certain benefits. It costs
£4.50/month (compared to the usual £10.50/month line rental). This gives you
line rental and includes £1.50 worth of calls each month. If you receive
Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance or Pension Credit and get it this can
be a serious saving. More at: BT Basic
    <http://www.btplc.com/inclusion/phoneservices/services/btbasic/>
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

For £10.50 you get: unlimited evening & weekend calls to UK landline numbers starting 01 02 or 03 (from 6pm every evening & all weekend). During the day you get these calls charged at 4p per min + you get 100 texts messages (worth £10) per month, friends & family discount (20% off call charges to your best friend & 10% off call charges to another 10 numbers) & free 1571 voicemail. This amounts to 468 hours of free calls per calendar month (call connection charges are not applied for calls made at evenings & weekends).

    You don't get unlimited evening & weekend calls for £10.50. it's an extra £2.70 so it's £13.20.
the 100 texts are only free on that same plan too.

How are you working out 468 hours of free calls???

Yes you do if you agree to a 'renewable' 12 month contract (the £2.70 is charged and immediately credited each month).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I'll have to look into that. I might even sign up for it as I'm not looking to move to Virgin Media anytime in my lifetime.

    Thanks.

Primus Saver CPS is better though (90 minutes per free call instead of 60 minutes) - see the HERE link in my signature below.
